I left Verizon and came to ATT when the Nokia Lumia was released. I spoke to an ATT store employee, a best buy employee, and a nokia rep that happened to be at the best buy store when I purchased the phone. I asked each representative if the phone would be upgradeable to Windows 8 when it was released... All three answered yes! Now I find out that this is not the case at all. I entered into the contract with ATT based on false information that I was given by the various ATT reps.
I called ATT and tried to find out a way to get me into another phone that would be supported for longer than a few months and they merely said sorry and offered me $50 for my troubles. This is completely unsatisfactory. I have 3 lines on the account and my monthly bill is around $180. At this point, I am preparing to pay the cancellation fee and go back to Verizon when the Galaxy 3 or the new iphone comes out. Any suggestions on alternative methods of handling this situation?

Yes, I agree. I would have rather had a honest answer from the ATT rep, best buy rep, and/or nokia rep that they weren't sure and I would have played the wait and see game. I guess its possible that Microsoft misled them as well.
the only valid answer you would get would be from either direct from Nokia or Microsoft. None of the other personnel (not even the nokia booth spokesperson would now it) you mention has the pull to get the straight answer. From the net it looks like MS has decided not to retro the code to work on older phones, which is not unusual given the limited hardware patforms that are available. Even the new desktop and server's have more complex hardware requirements then previous releases

Odd, as it was rumored before the Nokia phones dropped that no 7.x phone would be upgradable to wp8. Actually, the rumor was out before mango that there were only two more updates to 7.x OS (mango and tango)
Did you happen to get any of these statements in writing?
Anyway, your Nokia Lumia is supported for two years. Which is about 18 months longer than your average HTC device (HTC cranks out new devices every 3 months, and after yours is "end of life" they prefer to pretend it never existed
)

The Lumia 900 will get Windows Phone 7.8 which will feature the new start screen and numerous other improvements that haven't been announced. Yes, it will get other features, they just haven't been announced yet.

Those new HTC phones that come out often and are EOL are Android phones. Every windows phone gets updates(except on AT&T) the Lumia and all other windows phones are EOL as soon as WP8 is released. Microsoft has said that all WP8 devices will be supported for at least 18 months so WP8 buyers dont have to worry about getting screwed like everybody buying a windows phone right now.

The features dont matter. WP8 apps wont work on WP7 devices. That is what is getting people angry. Developers will drop WP7 and make WP8 apps because they can be easily ported to Windows8. WP7 is dead, we will all have bricks until we are eligible for an upgrade or Microsoft pays for us to get new WP8 devices. However if you have been with AT&T for many years it wont hurt much because you can upgrade to a new phone at a 2yr price and new 2yr contract every year.

Your phone didn't stop working the day they made the announcement. You buy a phone for what it can do today, not what you hope it might do tomorrow. We will still have apps, I imagine we will still get updates, the sky is not falling. This hysteria over the whole matter is getting out of hand. If your so butt hurt over it, go buy an android phone that probably won't see an update to save its life ever except for some bug fixes. Or go get an iPhone so you can be obsolete every year no matter what anyway.
