No tethering supported in the initial release!
"A Microsoft official recently suggested that it would be up to cellular carriers whether to allow so-called "tethering," but Microsoft confirmed to CNET on Friday that Windows Phone 7 doesn't support the feature at all. Microsoft won't say if future versions might allow for tethering."
I do not tether often. But when I need to, it is super convenient. I have no idea why it is starting to look like the initial release of WP7 will not be nearly the competative punch I had anticipated from MS geared at recapturing lost market share to apple. Instead it is starting to look like a 'project' OS. Very nice, but very incomplete. And we all know how bad att is at supporting software or ROM updates on their phones.
I really hop that WP7 does not get released with so little going for it that it simply fades into oblivion behind the Iphone. I really love my WM phone and do not want to have to switch to Apple. I suppose I would go Android first.

link please alythough it really does not matter, since it is a waste of a expensive phone and you are required to have th 2gb plan + tehtering option, cheaper to use a cellular modem, more data and you don;t tie up your phone

Sorry. Here is the link. This was pretty big news over the last day or so. At least phone geek news. CNET is usually pretty reliable.

found it later, but not as big an issue as it is being made out to be, granted it might come in handy for a emergency situation, but for normal use it is more economical to have a usb cellular modem.

I agree with you. But I want this new OS to come out strong and I am afraid that it is in for an incremental development. I have been defending the OS for quite a while and I just hope that apple does not eat its lunch.

Don;t see the lack of tethering as anything to detract from the strength of the release, the reported lack of cut and paste is a lot more likely to affect the release, especially in heavy business users then tethering will. Personally looking forward to the new release of the units, we already have a project on the drawing board for converting our iphone and windows mobile vertical market apps to windows mobile 7 and have put the android conversion on hold.

Well, we are about to find out. I think that we are down to about two weeks of waiting now. Personally I cannot wait. I just hope that HTC and Microsoft come out swinging with a VERY polished OS. If not HTC, I may have to switch back to Samsung for the first time in years. The Samsung i8700.

I know of 6 that will be sold when they are first available, the project team is interesting in hitting the bricks running on the vertical market apps. Personally more interested in the I917 Cestus

ummmm..... with wcdma also known as 3G you don't 'tie up your phone' when you are using the data connection. you can do both data and voice at the same time.
i do it all of the time. the ability to tether is essential to road warriors. wifi 'hot spots' are no where near as convenient and secure as many would lead you to believe.

after i found about the cut/paste issue i was a little peeved. but with tethering not being offered as well i am going to have to pass on this iteration of windows phone 7. hopefully the folks at xda will do something about this travesty. and it is a travesty.

We have a set policy - no wifi hotspots for any company business. violation of the policy is a written warning the first time, termination the second, same policy we have in place for hacking the smartphones.
Cellular modems are issued to people that require computer access all the time, tethering is not a economical proceedure. As you state with 3G it works when it is available - have not seen 100 percent promises of 3G where my people go. Geat example - sitting in an airport right in a major metropolitian area that ATT is the prefered vendor right now waiting for a connecting flight - cell phone shows no 3G connection at all. Working on my cellular modem built into the laptop at the moment.

Cut and paste is the only major issue, as I have stated tethering is a moot point. Were I find confusing reports is the "lack of removable storage" comments, all the specifications that I have seen show the upcoming phones all include removable SD cards. Will have to wait and see, have already talked to my sales representative and will have 2 of each brand of W7 phones that hit the streets right after the official release date of them to give to the developers to play with.

Hmmm, the Cut & Paste issue is the one that will likely send me straight to the Android and also to another carrier as AT&T doesn't carry the best Android phones at present.
I want a very nice screen with a full qwerty keyboard and they've got none.
I'm just a personal user and I use Cut & Paste all the time. Who, on God's green Earth, wants to re-type stuff into their phone when you could just cut & paste. WTH?
That is just toooo over the top stupid!
Steve
