It's not good for customers, but Microsoft and Nokia have no leverage with wireless carriers at this point. They're simply not in a position to try to force AT&T to behave better, because AT&T holds all the cards.

If consumer demand for WP7 grows appreciably, then things will change; AT&T will strongly desire to offer WP7 devices and will be more willing to agree to whatever is necessary to do so (as they did with the iPhone).

Microsoft was naive as to how obnoxious some wireless carries would be, but I don't see that there's much they can do about it at the moment.

There is a copy of the email I recieved from AT&T asking about the 8107 update. I guess they feel we must be stupid because, they only reference the Mango update:

Thank you for taking the time to e-mail AT&T regarding obtaining the latest update for your LG Quantum phone. I apologize for any frustration this may have caused you. My name is Jerry Pilgrim, and it will be my pleasure to assist you today.

The latest update for your device is as follows:

Beginning September 27, 2011, customers with AT&T branded HTC Surround, LG Quantum, and Samsung Focus Windows Phone 7 devices began to receive notifications on their device instructing them that an update is available. The notifications are being rolled out over time, so not all customers receive the notification immediately. The notice instructs customers to connect the device to a computer running the Zune desktop software in order to receive the update. After receiving the notification, the user may connect their device to a PC running Zune (or a Mac running WP7 Connector), and they receive the update. This update only takes about a minute to install.

The device update process once the device is connected to Zune or WP7 Connector for Mac is as follows:
1. Software downloads to the computer.
2. A full backup of the device is performed.
3. The Mango update applies to the phone.
4. The phone's data is restored from the earlier backup.

This is a complete joke, as someone who has been a customer for over 10 years, I am outraged at the fact that AT&T can think that their customers don't get information on their equipment.

I feel for you guys there. When i went there to the states. Customer Service was the best I've seen anywhere. If this the sort of reply you get. The just as bad as here except one carrier telstra. CEO has initiate a Customer Service prioties as the main goal. Really ATT board member should be ashamed of themselves with this sort of reply

Every once in a while tweet to @ATTCustomerCare about disappearing keyboard. They do call you back, and raise your voice. As of today morning the guy atleast acknowledged that they are getting lot of complaints about the keyboard issue, and he wasn't sure if it will be fixed any time soon lets make our voice heard.. Don't forget to add #WindowsPhoneSmokedByATT hashtag everytime you get a chance. Let our voice reach some one with something between their ears at ATT.

Anyway, it still sounds like my LG Quantum won't get fixed.

I still wholeheartedly disagree with waiting to push out the keyboard fix. That's a major bug. Imagine if the iPhone had a bug which made your camera not work? I bet Apple would have a patch going in a days ...

Feature enhancements, sure, roll those up at a later time. Bug fixed, NO!

That's all fine and good, but should we have to wait until the fall when Tango is released (and after AT&T takes months to "test") before we can use our broken phones? What if a bug caused the phone to stop being able to make calls consistently? This is basic functionality and a fix exists.

This is not OK. Keep the pressure on, as we have broken phones that need fixing ASAP. You pay every month for service that includes messaging and mandated data. You now have a needlessly broken phone that does not let you easily text, email or use the web. That's negligence and we should not accept that all will be OK in the Fall when most of you peasants will be eligible for an upgrade and we can lock you into two more years "whaddyagonnadoaboutit" service.

This is good, but it can be made better going forward. Somewhere - say, att.com/updates/windowsphone - you list the updates, decisions (or pending decisions) for each update. That means I or any other customer can come get up-to-date info straight from the source. Example:

- CR1 (8107) - ATT: Passed - Date: Not released

- CR2 (8???) - ATT: Passed - Date: Not released

- CR3 (????) - ATT: Rolling out - Date: Under review

Keep the discussion going, but own the message directly and with current data.

Of course they are vague. They don't care that we have BROKEN devices and that it's THEIR fault. Wait for Tango that has no official release date and then AT&T will claim that they have to do extensive testing. (Nevermind, that their "extensive" testing didn't do squat to prevent this Mango bug.)

This is UNACCEPTABLE. KEEP THE PRESSURE ON!

I also think that it is entirely possible they'll EOL these devices and not do the update at all. This delay gives them plenty of time to justify leaving us all out in the cold.

Just spoke with someone in the complaints department, and he told me a few things that were interesting:

1. AT&T considers any information regarding testing or not testing of a patch or software release to be proprietary

2. They have no release date for 8107 or any other update for our devices

I told him that AT&T needs to examine that policy, as I find it very laughable a company would consider testing an update to be proprietary information. What's proprietary about testing it? We aren't asking for HOW you test the update, just that if you are or are not testing the update to begin with. Then, once you have a confirmed release date, let your customers know.

I even brought up the fact that customers (existing and new) will have major concerns of how updates will be treated with the Lumia 900 and Titan II. These are real complaints, and AT&T needs to do a better job, as they have a serious customer satisfaction issue on their hands.

Oh, and I was nice, and didn't yell. If you do get a phone call, please, PLEASE be nice and explain your grevence.

I haven't heard any news around the older windows phones.. I'm a Quantum user too Atleast you don't have to worry about any keyboard bugs with that nifty slide-out keyboard!
