Except for those employees here who have ATT globe next to their name, we are all customers like yourself or there are ATT customers here who do so in their own personal life.
While I am sorry that you had a death in the family, the usage was legit. I would be surprised if they did give you the credit. I have seen times where they may backdate a plan change while in the current billing period but that may not be the case here.

My service went dead today for 2nd time in 2 months resulting in unaccaeptable family & work crises directly caused by these Repeated ATT Service Failures. It gets worst.
ATT records clearly show that I have NEVER received billing service since Nov 2012, despite Repeated Requests; I receieved 2 threats from ATT to pay with No formal accounting instead!
ATT records clearly show that I Repeatedly Reported ATT-provided phone working Improperly. On 1/22/12, spoke with a Jeff Thompson. of ATT. I told him of ATT featured Text Blocking on my phone, he sent repair instructions by Text instead!
ATT records clearly show that I made repeated phone, email & written via USPS attempts to correct ATT Non-performance, and today I today instructed "Erin", Employee #*** to restore service within 15 mins or cancel the non-performing contract altogether. ATT Dialogue Record shows she choose to cancel contract instead. With phone service cancelled 2X without immediate correction & no other options, I Agreed 100%!
*My bank records show ATT has not cashed check #7283 of 2/2/13 for $166.83. Bank even suggested stop payment for non-performance, instead that check is FINAL PAYMENT!
*ATT is Rated Poorest National Wireless Provider: That Is No Surprise. Please send confirmation of Final Payment & Contract End Immediately! Thank you.

I'm sorry to hear you had a death in the family, but if AT&T gave credits for that, they'd have people calling in left and right claiming to have a death in the family.
Anyways you can always ask AT&T to backdate your minutes and data plan, so you can pay less.

You knew before you CHOSE to use GPS that it would take you over your limit, yet you did so anyway knowing it would incur a charge. Then after you incurred a charge you asked AT&T to waive the charge. The family member's passing has nothing to do with it.
Wouldn't that be the same as your boss asking you to work overtime, then after you do he tells he he doesn't want to pay you for working the extra time because he had some kind of personal hardship?

Also, why do you consider this bad customer service? You asked them a quesiton, they answered it. You wanted something for free, which all the other customers have to pay for, and they said No. That's not "bad customer service".
When you had to travel out of town for this situation, did you expect the gas station or airline or whatever to waive their fees too?

This is the type of response that a poor customer service company would have! Sorry to say!
