My two Samsung Captivate phones have lost the ability to charge. Mine is completely dead, my wife's you have to wiggle the cord to get it to charge.
Less than one year of ownership. I cannot get a free warranty replacement because there is a visible scratch near the camera. I applied a Zagg shield to the screen and a case before I began to use the phone.
Also, someone at AT&T messed up when we bought these things by adding parental controls to our account instead of insurance. FAIL. I don't have kids. Who, in their right mind, would purchase smartphones of this caliber without insurance?!?!
Unfortunately for me being as stupid as I am for allowing AT&T to make such a mistake on my behalf, I am without the primary phone in my house. I also use this phone for work and I am an IT manager for 15 hospitals in the northeast, so in turn I FAIL!
Thank you AT&T!

Now they want to downgrade us to lesser phones.

A simple visible scratch does not/should not void the warranty. That would be normal wear and tear. A cracked case, screen or broken parts are considered physical damage. I've never had an issue with the warranty when they received mine that was scratched up. And mine was worse that what you described.
Are you just going off the spill they give you before you send your phone in on what is/is not covered? Did you mention the scratch?
So you have issues about the scratch for yours; then what about your wife's phone? What did they say about repairing her device? I didn't see a mention of hers.

This is a failure on both sides and unfortunately you are just as responsible. Why did you not check your bill to ensure you were getting what you asked for? I know it's hindsight now but just mentioning for others that read this to always check your billing statements for accuracy.

OP - "My wife's you have to wiggle the cord to get it to charge."
__________________________________________________
When I first got my Captivate, I thought mine had an issue with the charger, too. I had to almost jam the charger into the port of the phone; and it STILL would not charge! I would almost have to tape the charger cable to the phone. Turns out, I did not slide the slider covering the port all the way. That's what may be the problem with your wife's Captivate. Try sliding the slider ALL the way, as much as it can go. It then should charge without wiggling.
For your's, a scratch would most DEFINITELY not void the warranty. That is just completely untrue, plain and simple.
