I was so frustrated with my lack of service I googled "AT & T SUCKS"---and was validated to know there are many many others who feel the same way...
I DESPISE AT&T - their disregard for acceptable service coverage, their lack of trained professionals whose lack of expertise creates unneccessary 2 year commitments, and their blaise attitude toward their misdeeds.

Not to rock the boat here but...
I find it interesting that when I was a customer service rep for Verizon Wireless, the majority of people that called in were ticked off at VZW and threatened to leave for at&t. The reason always varied; refusing to waive fees, overage, past dues, service, coverage, device issues, but it always boiled down to the fact that many customers of all carriers walk in blind expecting white glove service and believing that they'll have coverage every square inch in the country and still not understand that service from all carriers is not garanteed (indoors and out) and that there are rules with the service and billing, and consequences when you break those rules (e.g. overage).
For some reason, with cell phones purchases that usually involve contracts, consumers don't do much research into what's truly involved when starting service with a carrier. Yet, when it comes to buying a vacuum, we spend hours (some, even days) in researching the right vacuum for them by learning the pros and cons of each vacuum maker.
Just sayin' guys and gals.

Verizon isn't much better. They just have their tech worked out better, they are better at customer communication. But they suck too...These 2 companies love each other. It's like a 2 company monopoly, they can limit access, charge excessive rates, treat decade long customers to the "love it or leave it" mantra and we are screwed bc where are we gonna go? I personally am really considering sprint. If they had slightly faster data, it'd be see ya later for me.
I was one of the fools who used to defend AT&T. I've been w them since Cingular. Got the 1st iPhone and other than bill shock I never got a taste of the "worst company ever" until recently with data throttling bc I used 2.1 gb. I've always averaged around 2gb and now I'm an "abuser" and can't barely load the app store at .10mbps speeds. They few exchanges I've had w AT&T about this has been pitiful. All I can do is file complains, let competitors know how I feel, and voice my concerns on forums and tech sites.
When they axed unlimited data they said "98% of users use 2gb or less per month" so by their own admission that would put many of us in the arbitrary 5% abuser category.

Just a few service updates for AT&T!
First, we have new data plans available:
-300MB for $20 monthly (an extra 100MB for an extra $5)
-3GB for $30 monthly (an extra GIG for only an extra $5)
-5GB for $50 monthly (again with the $5 increase, and this plan works even better than the 4GB for tethering!)
The unlimited plan was nixed because it's true...97% of customers almost NEVER hit the 2GB data mark. I guarantee that if those of you with Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, etc, all checked your data usage for the last month, it will most likely be less than 2 (or now 3) GB. Why? Because of WiFi. By connecting to WiFi, you don't use any of the data from your plan AT ALL!
My personal opinion? If you want to do heavy downloading...DON'T do it from your phone. That's what your laptop and/or desktop is/are for. DSL is built for heavy consistent web traffic...smartphones are great on the go, but only if you do things like Facebook, YouTube, email, etc.

Think of the network as a doorway...if everyone tried cramming through all at once all the time, very few people would get anywhere. But if they all lined up one by one, movement speed would increase like crazy!
I reiterate...DSL is built for heavy consistent web traffic...smartphones are great on the go, but only if you do things like Facebook, YouTube, email, etc.

There's very little network congestion,if any. AT&T just wants to frustrate unlimited plan holders into paying more$ on a tiered plan.
Pay more $,and you can congest the network all you want! What they're doing really sucks.

Most people surf at night. Known fact. I do as well (mostly because college classes and work take up my time during the day), I'm a night owl, and I guarantee a majority of the US populace are as well.
And yes, LTE has a larger handling capacity. Another known fact. LTE is also known as the "true" 4G standard, meaning it meets and often exceed basic 4G speeds.
Regardless, I guarantee unlimited smartphone data will be a thing of the past sooner than we expect. If anyone has their unlimited smartphone data plan, I recommend hanging on to it as long as possible. Tiered data is the way of the future, and a lot of cellular providers are jumping on-board quite quickly.
And as many have said...no cell phone carrier covers 100% of the US, because right now, it's impossible. However, plans are being made to cover areas that weren't covered before. And the AT&T network covers about 98% of the US at this point.
Here's a little reading for everyone!:

"IMO, if most people were on tiered packages, and stayed within the plan they've selected, I can almost personally guarantee that the speeds would kick back up for many people.
Think of the network as a doorway...if everyone tried cramming through all at once all the time, very few people would get anywhere. But if they all lined up one by one, movement speed would increase like crazy!"
Can you explain this? I don't understand how being on a tiered package would allow speeds to increase for "many" people. Shouldn't everyone be getting the same speed roughly? How does it make a difference if I have everyone on an unlimited (remember, 97% don't go over 2GB) plan or on a 2GB (now 3GB) tiered plan? Wouldn't you see the same problem regardless if everyone is using the data at the same time?

Speeds will never kick back up until AT&T gets rid of their evil $ grubbing policies!
In the beginning I wanted AT&T to aquire T-Mobile! But after this singling out the unlimited plan holders for harassment,I realize it would have been a nightmare if AT&T got more of a monopoly!

This is the absolute worst company I have ever done business with. i lost my job and had to cancel my very expensive phone service. They will put me in collections if I don't come up with 900.00 in the next two weeks. I offered to make payments and they wouldn't even consider it. No one can think and the customer service reps, even the managers are rude and obnoxious. Too bad you lost your job, you go to collections.

I'll add my 2 cents worth.
I made some changes to my account;
added a third line with a Samsung Galaxy 2 S . Used it on my main line to replace a phone that had recently broken.
Took an old Pantech slide phone and put it on the 3rd line. Setup the third line with voice ONLY.
Next month- bill comes in with a data plan. called customer service and was told that line HAS to have a data plan since it has a smart phone on it. They verified - it was the pantech phone.
that Pantech really is nothing more than a text message phone. - i don't know HOW its called a smartphone - but ok.
but, itsn't the account MINE?! Don't I get a say what plans go on what lines?!
If the answer really is NO - then I'll be switching compaines.

I drop 75% of my calls. Before AT&T bought out Cingular I had good service, now I don't have to worry about overusage because I drop the call before I have time to say hello. AT&T SUCKS!! The monthly bill has tripled, the service is ed.

Let them put it into collections, they can't kill you. I don't think they can, anyway. Pay what you need to pay first, like Dave Ramsey says, and then give a portion to whoever is left, AT&T included. It takes a long time for them to really do anything but bark at you, so relax, and pay what you can until it is paid off.

YUP ATT SUCKSSSSS. Constant disconnections, lower than advertised bandwidths, they could never fix the problems... Then they slap on a cap on the bandwith... that was it. Finally switched to a different company with 5 times the speed for CHEAPER... when I called ATT to tell them I'm gonna cancel because of the price they tell me OH WE CAN LOWER THE FEES FOR YOU IF YOU STAY WITH US... man such slime balls.

Actually, SBC (the old Southwestern Bell) bought BellSouth, the other company in the Cingular joint venture, and then proceeded to buy AT&T.

I've had great customer service with at&t. My problem is the lack of improvements to the network. I've been a multi-line customer for seven years and have just been to my wits end with at&t's lack of expansion in my area. Seven years and no better coverage then day one. Come on, I'm considering adding a 4th line for my daughter, but without improvement, seven years of loyalty all for not. I want to stay with at&t, question is; does at&t want me to stay with them? I realize Wisconsin isn't the prime market, but the coverage is horrible in comparison to almost all other providers.

I'm sorry you're experiencing poor coverage.
If you're not already using it, I highly suggest downloading the Mark the Spot app so you can quickly report network issues. Here's a link with more information: http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB1061

If you BYOD to T-Mobile, you don't have to have a data plan on a smartphone.
