If you are starting a new account in your name, it may require a deposit if you do not have any credit history, which adds to your beginning costs.
If you can't afford a phone, wait until you have the money to buy the phone.

Technically ATT is letting pay for the phone over a period of time. That's why you have to sign a 2 year contract. A iphone is around $600-700 bucks. We pay $200-300 for one. ATT eats the additional upfront cost. They then get that money back as you pay for their service over the two years.
Since you are young, this may be an excellent learning experience. It is important to learn your priorities. Having one of the top of the line cell phones and/or cell phone providers shouldn't really be a priority for you at this time in your life. If you find it difficult to afford the phone, you might want to consider a prepaid option.
You are young. You should do what you can to build your credit. Don't put yourself in a situation where you might be harming it.

I think ilikewireless' suggestion is a good one.
If you're not in a place where you feel comfortable getting a contract where you're obligated to pay a certain amount each month, maybe a GoPhone is a better option.
Here's a link to GoPhone info: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/gophone.html and a link to the Prepaid board if you have any questions about it: http://forums.att.com/t5/Prepaid/bd-p/prepaid
I hope this helps!!
