Got this message from AT&T and I called back and ask them why is my plan changing and they said that I've been tethering my device and I told them that my iPhone 4 is not set for tethering and that my iPhone is not jailbroken or modified and I told them "why would I tether my iPhone 4 to a device if the Internet it self on my phone is slow and that my house has cable Internet and asked them how do you track down a person if they are tethering and they said don't know they only know that the data amount that is used so I asked them is there asks website or app or anything that suspect of I tethering at the account manager said WE DON'T KNOW so I asked is see that AT&T don't know that a person is tethering if it doesn't know only by the amount of data that used to load a website or a video or music so I'm writing this that they are trying to take away are unlimited data plan I'm going to fight back

I had the same exact problem. Att took away my unlimited data and stuck me with a very expensive tethering plan and a tiny data plan. I DON'T TETHER! Check my account usage. I DO NOT TETHER! Why would I want to be stuck with a tethering plan when I DO NOT TETHER?!
I think I am nearing the maximum usage of new tiny data plan. I have gotten two texts recently saying I am nearing my limit. This is ridiculous because I pay ATT a lot of money every month for years and years and this is how they treat me?! I'm about to go back to verizon or some other company who will appreciate my business.
I WANT MY UNLIMITED DATA PLAN BACK PLEASE ATT.

wingedrider I did send a PM just now. thank you.
Why do the cell phone companies offer such small data plans when data is so easily used up?
It takes about 3.5GB of data to watch a 2.5 hour long, streamed, netflix HD movie on my phone. So, I'm going to use up my entire data plan for the month and be charged overages in 200mb blocks just because I wanted to watch a movie on my phone?
I was on vacation during the past winter and watched a few movies on my phone via netflix. My data usage went from a few megabytes each month (for the last 5+ years) to almost 7 GBs for just those 3 months that I was driving cross country in my RV on cavation... ocassionally watching movies on my phone.
In the realm of things, using 7GB of data for 3 short months is NOTHING. Especially, if that customer has a long history os using just a few megabytes of data every month for years while on an unlimited plan... like I did,
At&t immediately accuses me of tethering and forced me off my unlimited data plan, onto a tethering plan and a tiny 2gb data plan. ![]()
I am really annoyed at this.

This is why ATT was so happy to get me off the unlimited data plan I had been on for years... They just want to be able to get more money from me. I am fairly disgusted with this situation.
Here's the email I just received...
Thank you for being an AT&T customer. Our systems have detected that 5183316xxx has used 198 MBs and is nearing the data plan limit. Data usage which exceeds your plan allowance will be billed at $20 per additional 300MB.
To check your data usage online or make any changes to your data plan prior to your next billing cycle date of 08/02/2012, please visit XXXXX For additional information about data plan requirements and tips on managing your data usage visit XXXXXXX
*Important: In general, domestic data usage will be reflected within 24 hours. In some extremely rare cases, it may take up to 72 hours to be reflected in our systems.
Thank you,

As we discussed in private message, I have passed this to our team and they will contact you.
It appears that you are currently on the absolute lowest data plan available and clearly, that does not meet your needs.
They will review your account with you and go over your options.

Thank you. I guess my problem is... how the heck did I end up on this lowest data plan availible when just a couple months ago I had an unlitmited plan? I didn't ask for this plan. Why would i?
Ya think that att is just trying to milk me for all I'm worth? It sure seems like that to me.
And $20 for 300 mb? Seriously?! That's highway robbery.

Any answer I give to that question would be speculation as I was not on the phone when you called in about the data issue.
I see that Anthony has already changed this to the 3GB plan while he is working on the other part of the issue.
Please continue to work with him.

For $10 more you will have 3GB's. If you need unlimited data check into prepaid, Tmobile, and even Sprint. But be warned, the Sprint network is the worst. However unlimited, you wont be able to even watch a movie on their network as it will just be buffering the whole time.

Since I'm not privy to what was discussed between herman7196 and jamileh (and AT&T CS), my comments are based strictly on what herman7196 posted in this thread, so here goes nothing:
Something doesn't add up here--herman7196's comments indicated that he/she was originally on the unlimited plan; typically the main reason why AT&T would remove the unlimited plan from a user's account against his own will is if they noticed that he was tethering. If that's the case, then from past anecdotal evidence AT&T would typically replace the just-removed unlimited plan with an appropriate tethering plan (currently 5 GB); it would not make sense for AT&T to call out an unlimited plan user for tethering, remove the unlimited plan from the user's account per policy, and replace it with a non-tethering data plan...and in his case, not only did AT&T replace it with a non-tethering plan, they initially gave him the lowest-sized data plan. Again, I dunno what was discussed so my comments are just speculation, but again, something doesn't make sense here.

There are a lot of unknowns here so we can't really come to a good conclusion without additional information. I think it's best to allow herman7196 & Anthony to continue to work together to get this resolved.

Hi again, someone did call me the next day & said that they would look into the problem and get back to me. So far, no one has gotten back to me about reinstating my unlimited plan. All that was done was to change my data plan to the 3gb for $30 a month. Sadly, a few months ago I had an unlimited plan for the same monthly $30 cost. ![]()
Anton, att did put me on a tethering plan even after I called them numerous times and told them not to change my account. A couple months later I noticed a new $45 charge on my bill for a tethering plan. I called again and the CSR agreed to remove the tethering plan (obviously I don't tether or why would he remove the plan?) and for some reason he then stuck me on the smallest data plan possible.
It's like att does everything possible to make their customers more likely to go over their limits and incur fees. As a business, I can understand this practice but as a customer, it's not very welcoming or appealing.
It's just like the 700 min and 1400 min family plans. One plan is too small so a family ends up going over and paying fees... the onther plan is too big so a family pays for minutes they will never use. Att could very easily offer a 1000 min plan but they know they make more money by only offering these 2 plans for small families.
The longer I stay with att, the more I detest them.

I just wasted the last 10 minutes of my life listening to a chris {personal content removed for safety} tell me that he can't get any proof to show that I actually was tethering because it's "proprietary data" but some mystery department says I was tethering, so I must have been.
Therefore, my unlimited data plan was ripped from me and I cannot do a darned thing about it.
I guess I am guilty until proven innocent. Nice job ATT. NOT!
I asked to speak with his supervisor and not surprisingly, he transferred me to a non working number.
ATT you just lost a $130/month, four phone, long term customer because of your greed.
We'll be gone within a month and over the next couple of years you'll waste your money sending me silly cards and letters about how much you value and want my business back. If you really valued my business you wouldn't be so stupid & greedy right now.
You should research how much money it takes to get a new customer versus keeping a loyal one.
Well, don't waste your money or my time sending me the sappy "we want you back" junk mail like my insurance company (geico) still does, We're not coming back.
Goodbye ATT.

Ah, now the mystery is cleared up--I wouldn't think that AT&T would replace your unlimited plan with the smallest plan right off the bat, just because they (claimed to have) detected tethering on your phone. What is shifty is that they first put you on the most expensive plan ($45 tethering), then when you argue that you weren't tethering and that you don't plan to tether, they then put you on the least expensive plan--what those two moves did is increase the odds in AT&T's favor that they can generate more money off of you than they would have made off of you had they not taken away your unlimited plan, IMHO.
Re: 700 and 1400 minute family plans--LOL you can bet some AT&T pundit here in this forum will claim that there was a study that showed that the majority of users either used <700 or >1400 minutes/per month (as a group), i.e., there weren't that many family plan users who used anywhere between 700-1400 minutes--hence why there is no 1000 minute family plan. Sorta like the "study" that was done with data plans that "revealed" that the majority of users used < 2GB of data per month, hence the original 2 GB plan. Yeah right, the majority of users consume less than 2 GB, that's why AT&T subsequently replaced the 2 GB plan with the 3 GB plan in relatively short time. Now I totally get that AT&T is in business to make money, but if anyone claims that AT&T came up with those tiered plan cutoff figures based primarily upon analyzing customer usage (whether it be data or minutes)--you keep on believing that. ![]()
2 GB should have been more than plenty, based on the pundits here who were arguing that most folks hardly even go over 2 GB...so why is it now that the smallest GB plan size is currently 3 GB instead of 2 GB? Don't sugarcoat it by saying that AT&T came up with these unique plan levels such that they give customers "bang for the buck"--it has very little to do with that and everything to do with maximizing profit per customer. The AT&T bean counters can't be too thrilled to see that folks like wingrider are re-evaluating their voice plans and dropping down accordingly (he mentioned this in a different thread, in case you were wondering where I got that from)...or that folks have found alternatives to texting plans that don't require them to pay $20 or $30/month (individual/family unlimited text plans)...

It's so blatant that att can't even say its "what our customers want'. They did all of this craziness to my account FOR MY BENEFIT?! Yeah right. Everything they did (and have always done) was to make sure that I (and all its other customers) are as close to exceeding their limits as possible... so they can make more on overlimit fees ... or... they force their customers on a plan that sees them repeatedly paying for services, data and minutes they don't need or will ever use. If these practices weren't so blatant, they would be brilliant. They way it stands now, att just tells its customers... Tough. You don't like our plans or the way we milk every dime out of you that we can? Then leave.
I just spoke with anthonyg and he still won't prove to me that I was tethering. You can't accuse people of something, change their account because of what you say they did WITHOUT PROOF. Their actions wouldn't hold up well in a court of law.
I also just spoke with shaniqua in the retention group and she offered me a $90 one time credit if I stayed with att. LOL. I've been a loyal customer since 9/2007 spending about $140 each month and that's how much they care about my business?! LOL
What a screwed up company att is.

that has been going on since last year - November I believe, it started at the top 5% then got switched over to 3GB for 3G and 5GB for LTE. sorry but they are not targeting you specificly, they do it for everyone, they did not figure out a way to screw you, it was in the terms of service you got when you first got the daa plan

I had a strange situation. I am on a corporate account with ATT since many years and have unlimited international data plan on my blackberry. Last month my wife got upgrade device - samsung note on our family account. She didn't like it and moved back to her iphone. I liked the device because of it's big screen and some other functions and asked att guy if i can switch the device. He said no issues and all was done in the att store. Few days later I travel on business to another country and first thing I got after landing and switching on the phone was that it will be cost me 20 bucks/ mb of data usage. i called att and asked why bcos i had unlimited data plan n got a strange answer....I cannot change my device....If i change I loose the plan....I was shocked....How is it possible? Why i am locked to only use blackberry to keep the plan? Any body there to help?

schoudhary71 - It sounds like there are two separate issues here.
When you moved to the Samsung Note, you moved off of your exisiting data plan which was likely a Blackberry data plan and therefore not available for the Note. Without loocking at your account, I can't say what kind of data plan you had, but it's likely that when you moved to the Note, you were switched to an appropriate data plan.
I'd like to have a member of my team give you a call to ensure that your account is set up properly. Will you please send me a private message with your name, account number, phone number and the best time to contact you?

I really think jamie is just here to placate att customers. She simply has att's customer service call you... instead of you calling them.
Big deal. <rolleys>
If you think that you're going to magically get a more acceptable answer just because jamie got involved... think again.
You are wasting your time hoping att will actually offer you an acceptable solution.

acceptable to who - you or adhereing to corporate policy? Funny thing about customer service issues, if you call in and get everything you want, customer service is the best thing since sliced bread, if you call in for a similiar issue another time and they can't do anything becasueof corporate policy, the customer service is the worst in the world.
They must be doing something rigth considering the recent 2nd quarter reports - 0.97 churn rate - the lowest in the industry, 18.8 growth rate in wireless, 1.7 growth in prepaid, $0.66 diluted EPS compared to $0.60 diluted EPS in the second quarter of 2011
So something must be done right. As far as Jamileh goes, if you take the time to do a little research you will she that she has assisted a large number of cutomers with customer service issues, either factual or precieved.
Unfortunatley sometimes good customer service does not mean that the customer gets everything handed to them on a silver platter just to make them happy, the corporate world just does not work that way.
