I am in the wrong forum but thought it would be seen here and moved, just let me know where you stick it.
Because of my job I am many weeks out in the sticks. I decided to try and get internet by getting service from Hughes Satellite corp.I had their dish installed on my RV roof and learned how to point it using a signal meter.
It sucks big time. I finally had a service guy come out (30 miles) and he couldn't get it any better.. it is almost as bad as dial up.
So I have an ATT phone and usually get good reception unless I'm in the RV. So I did a little research and found that the majors carry some internet service. U- verse is of course among them. I am ignorant of most of this and have a fairly new desktop and no plans for a laptop or other computer. My question is:
Can I get internet in my present set up, that is not slow and won't cost a lot monthly? If so, how and from where?
I know I will need a (something)that will be able to accept an external antenna that I can mount on my roof. But that is about all I know for sure. I tried talking to sales people but they don't know anything and can't transfer me to anyone who does.
I would appreciate any suggestions, ideas or even wild guesses.
Papa Ray
P.S. I can change services. My ATT contract is long over.

Well there are some options, but a lot depends on your circumstances.
When your "in the sticks", are you talking the middle of nowhere or do you end up at RV parks? More often lately, RV parks offer wi-fi internet access.
Is it the same location each time or different locations? If you go to different places each time, you may find that one single provider can not provide coverage for all those places.
What do you use the internet for when your "in the sticks"? Data plans for cellular internet access are not cheap and usually not very generous. ($50 for 5 GB from AT&T)
AT&T (as well as other carriers) have 3G/4G USB modems which you should be able to put under a dome on top of your RV (as long as it does not exceed the operating temps for the modem) and then use a USB extension cable to your computer.

Thanks for the reply.
I would use the internet mainly for work, but also for some distraction. I have DirectTV for movies installed in (on) the RV for movies. But the work part is what I'm needing. To send compiled reports and such using my present Hughes setup is just too slow and sporadic at best.
No, no parks, no WIFI, more like in the middle of nowwhere unable to see any civilization for miles and miles. Sometimes my ATT phone doesn't have enough signal to work but most times it works for voice but don't know about data. I don't use data on my present ol' fashioned cell phone.
You mentioned a cap on data, I have no idea how much I would use but 5 GB sounds like enough, but would have to try it to be sure.
Putting a modem on the roof without air conditioning under the dome would fry the unit in a few minutes as the temps get up to 110 in the day and never fall below the low eighties at night in the summer. I was thinking more of an antenna on the roof. (if I could find a modem that would accept one.)
I'm not real savy on the subject as you can tell.

Well then I would start here. http://www.pcantenna.com/servlet/StoreFront . They appear to have external antennas for most provider's modems.
Hope this helps.
