It is possible for law enforcement to request and receive information regarding a particular user, as well as broader information gleaned from so called 'tower dumps', without requesting a warrant. Even if your particular number is not part of an investigation, the police receive information regarding text message content, who you've called, location, etc.
I'd like to know what ATT is doing to protect the privacy of its customers, do they inform us when information regarding our number is requested? Or when they furnish information about number to police? This is a legal grey area and it seems the least they could do is make us aware of who and when they give out our private information too.
