Will unlocking my AT&T phone (not an iphone) automatically cancel the contract?

My contract is set to expire on Aug. 16th. If I unlock my phone before this will it automatically cancel my contact?

If not, how do I let AT&T know I want my contact to expire?

After the contract expires you have to physically call them and tell them you want to either port the number of just cancel the contract. If you are not planning to switch to another carrier you need to nothing, the serivce will automaticly switch to month to month

One thing to be sure of that August 16th is your actually contract experiation data and not the phone upgrade eligibility data, if your account is qualify you can upgrade 4 months or so before the contract expires. Contract end data and upgrade date sometimes are not the same time

It is common for AT&T to provide the unlock code for non-iPhone customers before their contract expires for use internationally, etc. Getting that code and unlocking your phone has no bearing on your contract. Also, you do not have to do anything to let AT&T know you want your contract to expire. Your service automatically continues on a month to month basis until you cancel it or enter in to a new contract by upgrading to a new phone.

Ok thank you. One more question - after it goes month to month..if I cancel in the middle of the month will I be charged a prorated amount or for the whole month?

Yes, you pay the whole month. At&T does not prorate final month's charges. It is in the Terms of Service.
True. Porting your number cancels your contract (if you are still under contract).

as mentioned that is how it works - again make sure your contract commitment is truely over with, if not you can have a unexpected large last bill with etf charges if you port before your contract is truely over with

Ok thank you. I looked under the profile section of my account and it does say 'contract exipiration date: 08/16/2012'. So I'm pretty confident my contract is actually set to expire. I plan on keeping the ATT service for one month past the 08/16 expiration date..then porting the number over to another carrier towards the end of that monthly cycle.

that is the best way to do it, remember your final bill is not prorated, so port near the end of your billing cycle
