Hey, look! I'm eligible to upgrade to a new iphone for $18!!
But....to switch to another carrier? That'll be a $95 penalty, thank you.
How many hundreds of thousands of people are out there STUCK with AT&T because they used to have exclusive distribution of the iphone? I'm one. Cannot wait to jump off the Death Star and get Verizon service---reliability, coverage, and speed instead of ineptness, conflicting answers, and hostility toward customers.

I guess you don't understand the terms you signed to. If you want to upgrade and renew your contract, you can with a new 2 year commitment and an 18.00 upgrade fee. you will also pay the discounted price of the phone. Your contract is not over yet, so if you want to switch carrier you have to pay the appropriate ETF. This is the same with any carrier.

It makes sense. You still have a few months left of your contract. You haven't fully completed it, yet. AT&T will not let you leave them without paying an early termination of service fee. This is stated in the contract that you signed probably around a year ago.
As for Verizon's moderators, I think they are no good. They let people discriminate others and do nothing to stop it. I've seen malicious things there before. While the moderators here may be harsh to some at times, at least they are doing their job correctly.

Uh, no. Wrong.
If I "upgrade" to a new device on one carrier, the subsidy I am now paing beginnin today and for the next 24 months is for the new device, not the old one. The subsidy that the ETF is supposed to cover is for the old device. If I upgrade, I'm off the hook for the balance of the subsidy on device #1. See? Not that difficult to grasp.
The *only* difference is continuing with ATT versus leaving for a new carrier. ATT will happily forego the ETF if you re-indenture yourself, but not if you're going to another company. It's just corporate greed and spite.
An on the contract issue, wrong again.
ATT iphone users like me have been suffering with this company's terrible service. They don't improve it, they just take our money. We are obligated to pay, but they are not obligated to provide the service their [dishonest] marketing promises.

I just know a way.
I am fairly well-educated at AT&T GoPhone prepaid service. That is why I know of a workaround.
As a matter of fact, I have two prepaid smartphones. And it only costs me __ a month. (Go on, guess.)

WITH the data service? I thought they were severely locked down. Do you have to jailbreak?

Yes, you can get data enabled without jailbreaking the iPhone, but it's a special process that is forbidden to be discussed here. I personally choose not to use prepaid data on either of my smartphones including the iPhone, but I may have to to be able to send/receive MMS messages.
