my mother wants to upgrade her phone to an iphone. i know she's required to upgrade to a data plan with this phone. if it turns out that she doesn't like it (she's never used a smart phone before and just got into texting). can she change her plan back to without data and reuse her old phone with no problems? i've told her i would buy the phone off her if it turns out she doesn't like it. i've tried searching the FAQ to help her out but i didn't see anything listing this situation. thanks for help!

Absolutely.
If for some reason you decide not to buy the phone from her, she can return the it and revert back to her original phone and plan within 30 days of purchasing the new iPhone.
