Dude, I hate to break it to you, but disallowing unsigned apps is the way of the future. You call that crippled; I call that a smart engineering decision. What exactly are you looking to do with an Android phone that can't be done with an app from the Android App Market? And don't give me that "it's the principle" nonsense. The vast majority of Android users probably wouldn't know how to install an unsigned app.

honestly who cares at this point.. with att cutting the cap to 2gb why would anyone want to stay. They don't care about Android haven't you guys figured that out yet? They reshape their whole policy just for one phone...

I notice you posting from a Windows Mobile phone. Have you seen that Windows Phone Series 7 also won't allow unsigned apps?
Your "wish list" of things you want, quite frankly, isn't going to happen, at least not on AT&T.

Unsigned apps can be dangerous as they might crash the phone software which would not be good.
i think the complaint is more to the point that you have to pay for it rather than just download it for free if you go on the market.
whether they charge for an app should be up to the programer not att.
as for the 2GB limit the newer phones all have wifi capability so no one should come close to using their 2gb limit plus it is on a network that is made to support that much traffic and will improve phone service.
not using wifi would mean that you are a way out there location even then just general surfing is not going to eat up 2gb of badnwidth. now if you are down loading movies or steaming video yea you can but then again that is why you can use the wifi connection.

"Unsigned apps can be dangerous as they might crash the phone software which would not be good.
Obviously, you haven't used any unsigned apps! I have been using the G1 rooted and at one point half of over 70 apps on the device were "unsigned" or not from the market. I have NEVER had any problems!
"i think the complaint is more to the point that you have to pay for it rather than just download it for free if you go on the market." - I beta test a lot of apps and I download apps from Devs that provide thier apps for free on forums. I DO NOT download apps for free that are paid apps! That is called - STEALING!
"whether they charge for an app should be up to the programer not att." - DUH~ that comment has NOTHING to do with apps not coming from the Android market.
"as for the 2GB limit the newer phones all have wifi capability so no one should come close to using their 2gb limit" Guessing you live in a tech savvy city that has a lot of free WiFi hotspots? I don't have WiFi for over seventy percent of my day - so, this will effect me.
I don't really care if ATT locks down the apps anymore - I'll simply wait it out for some tech savvy dev to "root" the phone - remove ALL of the ATT CRAPWARE and restrictions and use it however I want. It is still a CRAPPY thing for ATT to do and a CRAPPY way to do business.
But, first ATT has to provide a decent Android device - all they have provided so far is CRAP, CRAP, and (soon to be) MORE CRAP. Come ON! The HTC ARIA - another backflop/crap phone. The screen is so small! Who would want to use it as a "smartphone!"
I can't WAIT till my two son's contracts are UP so I can afford to DITCH my ATT family plan and go to a carrier that has SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE iCRAP for sale as a smartphone. And, NO BB/WinMo DO NOT count - they are so far behind in GUI/OS functionality that they can't even see Android/iCrap's dust.

"Obviously, you haven't used any unsigned apps! I have been using the G1 rooted and at one point half of over 70 apps on the device were "unsigned" or not from the market. I have NEVER had any problems!"
So you have tested every phone on the market and you know for a fact that every phone on the market works with every unsigned app that is created and put out on the internet? if you want to get snarky then lets get snarky.
Unsigned apps are like unsigned software with windows. sometimes it works and has no problems other times not so much and can cause major problems. the thing is you don't know. you are taking a chance. not all phones are the same and not all phones firmware and other things work exactly like another phone.
just like what works on one computer might not work on another even though it should.
"Guessing you live in a tech savvy city that has a lot of free WiFi hotspots? I don't have WiFi for over seventy percent of my day - so, this will effect me."
I don't know i haven't check. more than likely there are hotspots somewhere near me to connect to. FL is wierd like that in some ways. You can complain about it but even verizon i think is switching to a capped plan.
Why? simple network stress. att is trying to fix there network as well to make it more reliable. so you either 1. upgrade all the bandwidth (which costs mega bucks) or 2. you limit the usage and charge less. so they went with limiting the usage and charging less. it is cheaper for them to add a hotspot than it is for them to increase bandwith.
"I don't really care if ATT locks down the apps anymore - I'll simply wait it out for some tech savvy dev to "root" the phone - remove ALL of the ATT CRAPWARE and restrictions and use it however I want. It is still a CRAPPY thing for ATT to do and a CRAPPY way to do business."
you would rather rant than keep up with the news of what is going on be my guest. ATT has evidently learned it's lesson from the backflop. the next android phones coming to market will be full out android phones with 0 restrictions on them according to all news reports.
"But, first ATT has to provide a decent Android device - all they have provided so far is CRAP, CRAP, and (soon to be) MORE CRAP. Come ON! The HTC ARIA - another backflop/crap phone. The screen is so small! Who would want to use it as a "smartphone!""
att has no say in what size screen is coming on a phone. they have no say whatsoever. you also do not know all of the details.
It could be very well possible that att was forced to sign a non-competition clause for X years to get the iphone contract. which i think is the case hence the delay in coming out with better phones. now that is almost up we are seeing them break into different markets.
"I can't WAIT till my two son's contracts are UP so I can afford to DITCH my ATT family plan and go to a carrier that has SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE iCRAP for sale as a smartphone."
i wish you luck i really do. other carriers have their own issues just as much as att has theirs. i would go to the other sites and check and see all the complaints.
i hate switching and my wife just renewed her contract. i am out of mine but i am not getting another phone till i see something interesting that i like. i am with you. there is nothing on the att market right now that interests me at all. i am waiting to see what happens and how that comes later on.
i am also frustrated that iphone is the only thing on the market, however like i said i am sure a non-competition clause was signed to get the deal. which would explain a lot of things. since that contract is coming up in the next year or so we could see some more phones come onto the market.

---I have yet to see any news reports that show AT&T learning their lesson. As we have no confirmation whatsoever that any other phone is on deck to come out any time soon...Even the Aero announced months ago has not been made official with even a release Quarter let alone a release date. I myself think the delay is due to appeasing apple and reconfiguring the roms on the devices they are getting so that they have all of the AT&T additional software and lockdowns.
"att has no say in what size screen is coming on a phone. they have no say whatsoever. you also do not know all of the details."
---Actually since it seems HTC is making the phone exclusively for them then they would have some amount of say into some of the specs on the phone. Much as google had say in the development of the Nexus One. Perhaps not as much as the google/n1, but AT&T would've had some input since the phone was being designed/manufactured for AT&T. I just done think they care about having a Desire/Evo Power phone as the iPhone is a more important market for them and appeasing Jobs is what they do.
"It could be very well possible that att was forced to sign a non-competition clause for X years to get the iphone contract. which i think is the case hence the delay in coming out with better phones. now that is almost up we are seeing them break into different markets."
I think any top of non-competition is still in the cards for AT&T. they've got the Ipad now Iphone4...Surely AT&T had to do something to guarentee that release exclusivity.
Perhaps I'm overly pessimistic, but AT&T has shown nothing but disdain for the Android OS. Their new android site is just a quick makeover, their new behind the scenes video was pure crap with no real meat. and even their new "android FAQ" on their android site is just a how to of how to fix all the junk they did to the backflop.

ATT is not going to release another phone until the I4 has hit the shelves. so you won't see anything new until july or august at the latest. yes i think this is stupid but then again iphone is their flag ship much like droid is for verizon. also the reports are all upcoming android phones will be with the google apps not yahoo. whether they allow unsigned apps or not still up in the air. i think it would be foolish of them not to. i saw an article on it but i have to find it again.
You also have to remember that apple probably has a non-competition clause with att so that they have to wait for i4 and on top of that any phone they do get has to operate the same way. i don't think you can install non-signed apps on the iphone.
or if you can then that is why you can't on other phones yes i think this is a bad idea and stupid but att agreed to it.
Unfortuantly i think that att is not going to get a decent phone better than the iphone. the samsung captivate is suppose to come to att as well. which is an off shoot of the galaxy s which has been making huge waves. that thing blows out the i4 any day of the week.
jobs can take a long walk off a short peer. if att doesn't realize that they are ticking off their customers by lack of choices for phones then well people are going to walk. i am not impressed with the i phone i think it is neat but limited in functionality.
i want something a bit freer and android does that for me (plus i hate apple).
I don't think it is disdain as much as they have locked themselves into this non-competition thing and since google and apple are at war with each other it makes it pretty hard for att to carry a android phone.
personally right now the best bet would be for att to just get rid of this non-competition clause and open their market up or they are going to be left behind. their apple contract is up in 2012 anyway which means that apple could go elsewhere. i know that verizon has been trying to court apple in that regard.

You mean how like the HTC Aria is suppose to be released on June 20th and the iPhone 4 on June 24th right?

pretty much yes. the aria was due june 20th. they are not going to release it till after iphone has been out for a while say 2 weeks.
i wouldn't look for any other phone from att till after june 24th and then into july sometime.
I personally think this is just bad businesses. the number 1 goal of business is to meet customer demand. while the demand for i4 is high the push for android is even higher.
on top of that att is going to have to buffer between android and apple which is not a good thing. more so since they are all wrapped up in this apple craziness.
it is a bad business model and i look for them to struggle. the only thing that saves them is that they are very large and many people have their other services.

Well the blog sites got it wrong again. The aria does not have a 1Ghz processor it only has a 600Mhz. And the intruder is the Aria which some have said they thought they were the same phone and it turns out they were right in that case. Watch the video and when they remove the back to install the battery it is branded as the intruder.

I live in St. Louis, a major city. While many of the coffee shops, restaraunts, libraries, and even some parks have public wifi. Work doesn't, my car doesn't, the kids soccer games don't, and the bars I frequent don't.
If I'm limited to wifi access, I'll just carry my netbook and be done with it. Won't need AT&T at all.

the captivate is compatible with n,g,b networks so finding a network to login to should be a problem as far as wi-fi goes.

not only is it their flagship, but its really the only real competition to apple.
ipad= galaxy tab
iphone= galaxy s
ipod touch= galaxy touch
they are taking it to apple in all of their markets aside from laptops and desktops, and they are going to crush apple. especially once googles music store opens up. why pay for songs on itunes that only work on itunes and apple products. zune store gives you mp3's (for most songs) not aac's. google store will hopefully give mp3's. apple has been way too closed minded and in my opinion (and hopefully the governments opinion since they are under investigation right now) what apple does is straight up illegal.
if microsoft tried to do what apple did, they would be sued for a monopoly, and they have been actually. if they told people to avoid a certain programming language they would be sued for unfair trade practices, and once again they were, they pretty much had to buy java out of bankruptcy, but apple does it, and its fine cause its apple.

You also have to consider the fact that the galaxy S or other versions can also read ebooks as well.
in fact B&N is suppose to be coming out with their android app so that is going to be sweet. I know amazon has their but i am not a fan of amazon kindle. i like the nook much better.
so i see samsung supporting this phone for a long time. yea they had some bad press about their other phones but that is because i think they were working on this and it some peple got caught in the transition. look at the people that bought windows ME they were in the same boat as MS went umm we are not supporting this anymore.

if anybody has been keeping track of the samsung galaxy series you will see that it is really their flagship line of products and they are really ramping up to slay apple. of course they are going to support it. so people stop your whining about the 1 samsung product that was supposed to get updated but didnt.
the galaxy series of devices are going to have phones, tablets, and media players, taking down apple in all of their mobile categories. all samsung needs is google to release their music store and apple will be left behind the dust (would say in the dust but they are there right now, they will be farther back then that)
the bigger issue which is still irrelevant is how well at&t will support the upgrade to the firmware, and even that is irrelevant because you will be able to root the device within 2 weeks of its release. heck, some devices now are getting rooted even before their street date.

We can hope they suppot it. And yes it would be dumb of them not too but they have such a track record with home electronics that there is doubt. And that doubt alone will hurt the sales of the units. I know I will not touch a Samsung product until I have seen them supporting them and I mean over a period of time. I have gotten burned by them in the past and will not put myself at their mercy. As the old saying goes. "fool me once same on you, fool me twice same on me."

The worst phones I have ever owned were Samsung. From memory leaks to freezing screens to a crappy signal, I just stay away from them now. Now this does seem like a nice device, but I do believe AT&T should have gone for the pro version with the physical keyboard.

I don't know if you noticed, but this little phone from this insignificant company in some place called Cupertino just had the single largest phone pre-launch and launch day in history.
This post is so mis-informed, I'm not sure where to start. Crush Apple? They currently are the #1 online music retailer in America. They have 70% of the market to Amazon's 12. Apple is also currently the largest tech company in the WORLD, if you go by market capitalization. That means their stock is worth more than Dell, more than Oracle, and more than Microsoft. Android is going to continue to be plagued by issues of different form factors, different UI overlays, version incompatibilities. Does it really matter if Android market share is larger than Apple's, when that market share is spread out among 30 or 50 models rather than the 2 Apple sells?
