Depends on the phone model. If your phone is hotspot capable, you would need a tethering data plan which is different from standard data plans.

With the new shared data plans that are coming out this month, I don't think you will need the tethering option.

correct, the new shared plan includes hotspot and tehtering even down to the 1GB plan
