I think Nokia has finally given up on trying to fix their Maps application--there are so many bugs in it that no one wants to buy it.
I'm even wondering if it is worth the price if they give it away.
I've been beta testing their latest version for them and it has numerous problems....so much so that I was just about ready to buy some other company's Mapping application for the N97 (Garmin XT, Sygic, etc.).
Problems included: wrong speed limits for highways, lagging position (it's always way behind you), voice navigation distances disagree with screen distances often by a large amount, hang-ups (navigation stops), etc.

Garmin has its own share of bugs too. I've been using Garmin Mobile XT version 5.00.50. It crashes every now and then. Landscape orientation is messed up.
Anyway, I've just installed Ovi Map on my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. It shows 3.03 (I guess this is software version) and map version 0.1.23.112. Are these the latest?

Mike1942,
How did you download it? I don't see E71X listed in the "Select your device" list. Only 10 Nokia phones are supported at this time. The supported E series are E52, E55, E72. You might want to try again in a few weeks.

I read the news article, downloaded and installed on my E71X. it seems to work ok, but i get message that drive instructions are a premium and wants me to sign up, 1 day, week, month, years ec. Whats up with this?
Since E71x is currently not supported for free Ovi maps, you might be getting that message. They said that they are trying to make all GPS devices compatible by the end of
March, but that doesn't guarantee that E71 will get it. It's an added bonus if you get it free, else you will get it with next phone.

If you are a private beta-tester then you are actually not supposed to discuss all these kinds of things ethically and legally. Also remember, you were testing
beta-version and there is a reason why it is called "Beta". Also Ovi Maps nav. may not be perfect, but they are improving it day by day and it will eventually become better.
Also, many people have expressed satisfactory reviews and i am sure Ovi Maps will become a killer app gradually with lot of social elements embedded in it. Just wait and watch.

I downloaded version 3.0 - E71 compatible. it works fine, but i have not paid license fee. I emailed Nokia customer care and got this reponse :
"Thank you for getting in touch with Nokia Contact Center.
I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that this matter has caused, Nokia is aiming to add more devices to the compatibility list for the Ovi Maps 3.03 and following releases. Please check for the compatibility list from time to time, as we are currently not yet able to provide any statements on what devices might become compatible in the future."
Based on this response, I can only assume that you have to be able to get version 3.03 to get the free version. I could not download this version with E71 specified.

UPDATE: more compatible phones
Nokia started with 10 compatible phones last week. There are at least 49 compatible phones as of this moment. E71 is listed but I don't know if that's the same as E71X or not.

Being a beta tester does not necessarily mean that you're not allowed to talk about what you're testing in of itself. For example, Google's Gmail is perpetually in beta, but you're free to talk about it all you wish. The key is that you can't talk about those closed betas that require you to sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement).
Anyways, as an E71x owner, I too would like to see 3.03 released for my phone. However, as regular E71's have FP1 which 3.03 doesn't support, and E71x's have FP2, but exclusively on AT&T with its own map app, I'd say it's unlikely that it would happen.
(Then again, if for some reason Nokia does release it for the E71 but not the E71x, I suppose I could still transfer the app over from my uncle's imported E71.)
EDIT: Nokia has a Beta Labs section on its website: http://betalabs.nokia.com/, which is open to all.

That's true. But the earlier poster, did not specify if he was using a private beta version or public beta version. I have been doing private beta version, so i know that they do make you agree NDA before using the beta-test version.
Regarding ur assumption on maps on E71x, i agree with you, i don't think Nokia would be able to release free maps version for it,(even though they would want to) due to AT&T's greed.
