My own personal experience is with two Samsung phones. I have an old stand by, a Samsung s200, with an external atenna. I also have a Samsung d900, which has an internal antenna. In my house I get full reception with my S200, but one or two bars with my newer d900. Maybe it's the internal antenna vs. the external one?

I have seen in my experience that it is a combination of phone, signal {Network Coverage} and surroundings.

Some phones are definitely better at getting and/or holding a solid signal then others. With just about every phone these days having an internal antennae, pay attention to where the antennae is internally, relative to where your hand rests when naturally holding the phone. If you find that your most natural/comfortable hand position is over the antennae, that can often cause reception issues.

Example, a lot of flip phones have the antennae at the bottom of the phone, so you should not cup the lower portion of the phone when holding it or you may reduce the antennae's effectiveness.
