I went to two of my local stores today and was told I cannot purchase the HTC One X without a contract today. On the ATT website it specifically says that I can purchase a device in store. To quote the No-Commitment Pricing link of the HTC One X order page:
"You may purchase a new AT&T phone without a contract at the no-commitment price. This non-discounted equipment purchase option does not require a two-year contract or other long-term service commitment. No-commitment equipment pricing is available to customers that are not on a prepaid or GoPhone® plan. You can purchase a phone at no-commitment prices at AT&T retail stores. For an AT&T retail store near you, visit our store locator."
I want to purchase this phone without a contract. Has anyone been able to purchase the AT&T version without a contract? Is it just my local stores?

would guess that if the phone supply is constrained the retail outlets will retain all they get to offer to customers that will get the phone at the subsidized price and commit for two years (better profit margin for the carrier). Suggest that you look outside the att retail store and check around at the franchise outlets like Best Buy, wally world, etc. They may have one that they are willing to sell outright.
It is more profitable to sell under a 2 year commitment then to selll outright becasue most of the time the outright purchaser is looking to go to a different carrier if they can get the phone unlocked, but with this being a brand new device the unlock probably wil not be allowed for 10 - 12 months as a gues

He didn't say anything about unlocked. He's not trying to buy an unlocked phone.
Subsidized phones do not give the carriers more money. They lose money on subsidized phones. That's why they require a 2-year contract. Only since the forced inclusion of data plans do carriers make money off smartphone sales. Sprint lost a ton of money on iPhone 4S, because of the subsidy.
Having said that, if you're a member try Costco. You get the full Costco 90-day return policy.
And of course, I love Amazon Wireless.

I had the same problem with the Lumia 900. The second store that I tried sold it to me at the no-commitment price. AT&T should seek to serve all customers, not just ones that they perceive to be more profitable.

I was able to buy the one x with no commitment price 2 days ago, came out to $600.86, when i went to exchange it at another store i was told i should not have been able to buy it because it hadn't been out for 6 months. I went to the store i bought it from and they gave me no trouble and got me out the door with a replacement in 20 minutes. I guess it depends on the store.

I also purchased the OneX at a ATT retail store the week it came out...No sorry I did I have had this phone and ended buying off contract Lumia as I just do not like the HTC crap on the phone.
Also apps are a pain assuring they work on ICS at this time. Think the Nexus is a better deal
So I am taking my OneX back to get a refund as it states 30 days.
PS. I also am not looking to go off to another carrier as I am on a contract (another story).
