If they didn't tell you it would cost up to $100 to fix and they found damage and charged you, you would be even more mad.
They have to warn you. There is a good chance that it is not physical damage, but they don't know without looking at it.
Therefore, they must give you the "warning". It doesn't mean that you will be charged unless they find physical damage.
