My E71x is arriving on Monday and I have a couple of questions:
1- Can I install apps and themes for the E71 on the E71x?
2- Does Xpress Mail display HTML mail using GMAIL?
3- Does IMAP work correctly?
4- Does the phone display a new email/ sms/ mms notification on the main screen? Does it tell you which type of message you have?
5- Has anyone tried the GMAIL app? Does it work as expected?
Solved! Go to Solution.

- Most E71 (S60) applications should also install on the E71x - but there are likely to be an exception here and there. For instance, reports have it that while the SkyFire web browser installs fine, you cannot actually run it. Also, to install Nokia Maps you need to choose the version created for the 6650, not the E71.
- No, XpressMail does not support HTML Mail. However, the newest SEVEN beta (the application on which XpressMail is based) does. You can download it from seven.com
- IMAP works fine in either XpressMail or SEVEN. Other IMAP clients are: ProfiMail, Emoze, Nokia Mail. For the latter, make sure to create an account and log in via the web site first, then use the option to send yourself a web link via SMS. (The version you would download directly from the web site is buggy).
- SMS notifications should be displayed by default. I don't use XpressMail, but SEVEN does not have this option (though it should update the email summary pane on the main screen). Nokia Mail should do both (i.e. update the email summary field, as well as give you the option to display a notification when new mail comes in).
- Sorry, I don't use GMail.

Just to follow up on my own summary: All of SEVEN, Emoze, ProfiMail, and Nokia Messaging now support HTML mails (in their most recent versions).
SEVEN, Emoze and NM are "service based" just like XpressMail - meaning that there is an intermediary (third party) that connects to your mail server and then pushes the mail onto your device.
ProfiMail connects directly to your mail server; however it is not free, and also it is not as well integrated into the S60 UI as the other clients.
The "default" S60 e-mail client is not availble on the E71x (AT&T removed it in order to promote their own XpressMail). It is not the most friendly of these (and does not support HTML mails except as attachment), but it is arguably the most versatile. Also, it connects directly to the POP3/IMAP/SMTP server.
I wrote up a more detailed reveiw of all of these here.

Perfect example of at&t giving Nokia a good rep by tailoring the phone to it's firmware.
