w760a Exchange ActiveSync and POP3

Hi All,

I just got the w760a and love it! I see online that the phone can connect to a Microsoft Exchange server to check email. But I don't see that option anywhere on my phone. Perhaps AT&T removed it from their branded phone?

I found a manual for the w760 online that shows the option should be in Settings-->Connectivity. Is there a way for me to check email on a Microsoft Exchange server with the phone? Or is there an application I can download to the phone to do this?

Also, how can I check POP3 based email? I don't see that option in this phone either, but it is mentioned as a feature on the Sony Ericsson site. Again, is there an application that can be downloaded which can do this?

Is there not a Mobile E-Mail client on the phone?  That's what is used on the at&t branded W580i for POP3 e-mail.  I don't know anything about using Microsoft Exchange with it.

Thanks for the responses. I checked the instructions in that link, and the settings option it says to go to does not exist on my w760a. It says to go to Mail --> Messaging --> Email --> Accounts

"Email" does not exist. It seems to be have been replaced with AT&T's "Mobile Email" application. In this application there is no option to set up a POP3 or Exchange account. There are options for specific providers (Yahoo, AOL, AIM, Windows Live, AT&T Yahoo, BellSouth, Comcast, Earthlink, Juno, MindSpring, NetZero), but nothing for POP3/Exchange. I wonder if there's an application which can be downloaded to handle POP3 or Exchange email?

Unfortunately at&t's branding does remove the generic SE e-mail application, which is supposed to be much better (push e-mail, etc.).   Sorry, I've only used the at&t Mobile E-Mail client for Yahoo e-mail with POP3 settings on my W580i.

Update here. I debranded the phone and now have Exchange ActiveSync working! Great. Caution to others who consider this route, as it will likely void your warranty. But in my case I need this feature on the phone.

I de-branded using davinciteam and talked to Sony Ericsson - it will not void the manufacturer warranty from defects. It works so much better de-branded. I used English - Russian firmware R3DA028. Google maps works very well and I don't get the stupid pop up messages. Well worth $13! Some things went away : XM Radio, all of ATT paid links; and MMS is not there... but I have not really played with it very much..... Seem to work faster and error: "INACTIVE SIM" went away.

Agreed, the phone is working much better de-branded. Well worth the $13 or so. More responsive and more features with less of the bulk. MMS wasn't working for me at first until after I loaded the appropriate settings. See here:

Only issue is I can't get the latest Google Maps (2.3.2, downloaded from Google) to recognize the on-board GPS. However the version of Google Maps included with the w760i works fine with the GPS. Yahoo Maps (in Yahoo! Go) and AmazeGPS also work with the on-board GPS. Nice!

I am considering debranding and see you seem to have some experience with it.  Does the AT&T video service would also go away?  Are there any risks of damage to the debranding?

With the phone debranded, can you use the onboard GPS to geotag photos.  The AT&T version does not seem to be able to do this?

Also, there are so many firmware choices from Davinci team, how do you choose?

The primary things I would recommend people at least consider before they debrand an at&t branded device are: 

1) Cingular Video will no longer be available - in fact you won't have access to at&t's MediaMall, but most things are available elsewhere less expensively anyway.  I've seen users upset that they could no longer get CV, however.

2)  If you use the IM client and having IM activity billed as SMS is important to you, you may not want to debrand.  It's the at&t IM client (Oz Messenger) that provides the SMS chargeability, and I've never seen anyone indicate they were able to find a replacement IM client that doesn't result in data usage charges instead.

Sorry - I can't be of much help in that area.    Although the aforementioned items are of no importance to me either, I've never debranded.  LOL.  Don't consider myself to be very technically competent, and I'd need assistance answering the questions/"choosing" software version too.

As was said, yes the video service goes away. In fact, all streaming videos seem to be broken. In my case I could live without it.

Yes, geotagging photos with GPS does work after debranding. I took a test picture outside with a good GPS signal and see the correct GPS location in the EXIF information in the JPG file.

For firmware choices, choose the "generic" one appropriate to your country. In my case I picked Generic USA. Here's a flash tutorial for another phone. For the w760a you need to hold down the 5 button when plugging in the USB cable, not the "C" key as it says.
