Does Transferring = Upgrade?

I am currently on my parents plan but I am looking to have the number transferred to my own account.  I have a few questions:  Since it's family talk/share plan, it says that I will have to get a new plan since there will be just me on the account.  With this "new plan" that I would be starting, does that mean I get to upgrade my phone?

The acount is new but I seem to remember that the upgrade date will stay the same - not sure though. If you have any grandfathered features like unlimited data for smartphones they will be removed though

In order to keep your same number you would have to do a transfer of billing responsibility, in which you would assume the rest of the contract. If you didn't keep the same number then it would be a new account, however you would be sticking your parents with an ETF.

Upgrade date does stay the same. The new plan is for minutes, messages and data. If you are currently on a data plan for unlimited, 200mb of 2gb for any smart phone you would need to chose a new plan.
