Effective immediately!

Effective immediately, AT&T will unlock an iPhone under the following circumstances:

- The person requesting the unlock is a current AT&T customer or a former AT&T customer who can provide the phone number or account number for the account

Re: Effective immediately!
Awesome news!! However, do these requirements still apply:

- must be in good financial standing
- iPhone must not be under current contract term

Do these still stand? :smileytongue:

not really sure if this is a late posting or a change in the requirments - one thing that is different from the 04/08 blurb

"a former AT&T customer who can provide the phone number or account number for the account"

this is different wording from the original report that was published earlier on the 5th estate sutes

maybe I am using the wrong search words but still can;t find anything ATT site

if his is a change it can affect those that purchase the phone via fleabay or craigs list

Where did you hear this? I still haven't found anything on AT&Ts official site saying they are even unlocking phones, much less what the requirements are.

got a link for it? It has definately changed from the original 04/08 initial release, they added a couple more restrictions to the proceedure, or at least expanding the definition of the original press release, number 1 and 5 are more restirctive then the original blurb

this is what the original press release stated

  • iPhone not in contract with AT&T, either having completed a contract or purchased without contract
  • AT&T account in good standing
  • iPhone IMEI number

Re: Effective immediately!
Still would like to see an official link to this, or is this an internal memo that you have access to as you are an AT&T employee?

If true, this would seem bad news for a lot of people outside the US since they probably aren't AT&T customers, and probably don't have the old account info if they bought a used phone that was once on an AT&T account.

What changed? Did AT&T just get swamped with unlocking requests from outside the US and decide it wasn't worth the effort for people who aren't, or never were, AT&T customers?

As per your first question, Yes.

For the last question i dont have any idea. Why they change the requirements or the eligibility. We will soon to find out. But I think this is due to a lot of people asking their iphone to be unlock even if they are not eligible. But i dont know :smileyhappy:

This will be bad for other user who got their iphones on ebay or craiglist or other online store. :smileysad:

if you got it subsidized then no - it is still under contract. if I recall right it was mid-october of 2011, so it will be around 2013 when you are eligible if you got it subsidized with a 2 year contract, if you paid full price for it you should be able to unlock it

You probably will not get your iPhone unlocked at this time.  You need to wait for your contract to be up. You may want to call and give it a shot but I would not expect a postive outcome at this time.

It's been pretty clear in the huge thread here on unlocking that the phone has to be out of contract to be eligible to be  unlocked.  That's been true ever since it started early in April and hasn't changed.

I finally got it by searching for KB414532.  I think the stuff that is posted after that number in the URL (e.g. #fbid=W8nEZBDGSIh) is a cookie or something related to the computer or account of the individual who copied the URL from their browser.  That link works only for that person, so they can always click on it and go there.  When I finally got to it, I had a different set of letters/numbers after the #fbid= , which probably only works for me on my computer.

had to select "wireless service" from a drop down box to get the link to function - here is the text of the link

What are the eligibility requirements for unlocking iPhone?

General Eligibility Requirements for Unlocking iPhone

AT&T will unlock an iPhone under the following circumstances:

  • The person requesting the unlock is: (i) a current AT&T customer; or(ii) a former AT&T customer who can provide the phone number or account number for the account.
  • The iPhone was designed for use on AT&T's network;
  • All contract obligations, including any term commitment, associated with the device to be unlocked have been fully satisfied; and
  • The iPhone has not been reported lost or stolen.

Current customers will be allowed five (5) unlocks per account, per year, so long as their account is in good standing with no past-due amount or unpaid balance and has been active for at least sixty (60) days.

Former customers will be allowed five (5) unlocks per former account so long as they owe AT&T no Early Termination Fee or other unpaid balance.

In addition, AT&T will unlock an iPhone for: (i) an active and deployed member of the military who is a current AT&T customer in good standing and is able to provide AT&T with deployment verification; and (ii) a person who purchased the iPhone from an authorized location at the "no commitment" price and can provide proof of purchase.

AT&T reserves the right to deny any unlock request that it concludes would result in an abuse of this policy or is part of an effort to defraud AT&T or its customers. AT&T further reserves the right to alter this unlocking policy at its discretion without advance notice.

Since AT&T doesn't officially support prepaid for the iPhone, that's probably not surprising.
