Hello world (iphone 4 at&t)

Hello everyone,

there's a question I need to ask about my iphone 4 and I would appreciate every input. I got an At&t iphone 4 16gb from my former job, the phone was lovely back in NYC but now I'm in Europe and I can't get it to work on a Greek carrier called Cosmote. I'm not that into those things but I think it's the network lock on this iphone, so can I require an unlock on my device to continue using my iphone overseas? I'm not an At&t customer. Is there such an option for me? It would be a petty to have this lovely device dusting...

Thanks in advance and I'm sorry if I didn't describe the situation well enough, but I'm more than willing to give further information, cheers :smileyhappy:

Re: unlock iphone 4 and 4S

Hello,I'm from Bulgaria I wanted to unlock my phone.Today I received this:                                                                           Thank you for contacting AT&T Customer Care about unlocking your iPhone xxxxxxxxxxx9828.

My name is Shatia Johnson and I will be happy to assist you.

We are unable to complete your request at this time due to the following reason:

The unlock code for this device is unavailable due to security restrictions based on the device's history. You may want to return the device and/or provide feedback to the seller.

AT&T will unlock an iPhone under the following circumstances: the person requesting the unlock is a current AT&T customer or a former AT&T customer who can provide the phone number or account number for the account; the iPhone was designed for use on AT&T’s network; all contract obligations, including any term commitment, associated with the device to be unlocked have been fully satisfied; the iPhone has not been reported lost or stolen. Also, current customer accounts must be in good standing with no past-due amount or unpaid balance and has been active for at least sixty (60) days. Former customer account may be eligible for unlocking so long as they owe AT&T no Early Termination Fee or other unpaid balance. AT&T will unlock an iPhone for an active and deployed member of the military who is a current AT&T customer in good standing and is able to provide AT&T with deployment verification; and a person who purchased the iPhone from an authorized location at the 'no commitment' price and can provide proof of purchase.

Please note, if you are traveling internationally, iPhone is a quad-band phone and will work in many countries across the globe. Please visit www.wireless.att.com/learn/international/ for information on traveling abroad with iPhone.

you need to supply the requested information - either the phone number or account number for hte phone. that is in the documented requirements for getting it unlocked. You have been refused once already and requested to supply the needed information, sim card numbers is not one of them

another thing to remember - when 72 hours is stated, it is not clock hours but business hours @ 8 hours a day or 9 days

Please provide proof that what you stated is actually defined in the AT&T unlock turnaround time policy;  maybe the business that you're in and/or own operates just 8 hours a day but many businesses are open for more than 8 hours in a (business) day.   Plus, I've read many a fine print where turnaround time is specified in "business days" but I've yet to come across even a handful that go to such an extreme that they have to specify turnaround time in "business HOURS", to the point that they also have to define what constitutes "business hours".  I mean, how many businesses do you know that refer to turnaround time--whether it be for shipping, callback, etc.--explicitly in "business hours"--i.e., "You will get a response in 72 business hours"?

"Business hours" is not the same as "Work(ing) hours"; just because someone works 8 hours a day does not mean that a business day by definition is 8 hours long--if that were the case, then all businesses would be open for just 8 hours a day...no?

was quoted business hours when we unlocked all the iphone 3gs's and 4's in the junk box at the office. I go by my expierence, the first unlock email showed up on thursday exaclty 8 business days after the call was made, the rest of the unlocked came in between 4 and 8 business days after the calls where made to unlocked them

Methinks that it was just mere coincidence that it showed up 8 business days after you called them; if it were to be accepted that "72 business hours" =  "9 business days", then why not just tell folks that it can take up to 9 business days?  I mean, do businesses tell folks that turnaround time can take "80 business hours" instead of saying "10 business days"?  If a business offered a "1 business day" turnaround, then by your interpretation it could have rightfully said "8 business hours" instead...no?  Let's be honest here--when AT&T told you 72 business hours...did you right at that moment immediately interpret it as being 9 business days...or did you just assume that after discovering that it took 8 business days for the email to arrive after you first placed the request?

I still believe the 72 business hours should be interpreted as being 3 business days--the fact that you got your email after more than 3 business days only shows that AT&T's stance about their stated turnaround time is that they are (probably) under no legal obligation to adhere to it.  Let's face it--what if you hadn't received the email until after 10 business days instead of 8-9 days?  Would you have raised a big stink about it?  Threaten to sue AT&T for not honoring their turnaround time?  Leave AT&T for Verizon?  Odds are you would have done nothing because you'd eventually acknowledge to yourself that AT&T has no legal obligation to stick to a turnaround time for a completely optional request (iPhone unlock).

once maybe, more then once as it happened no what at all.

Does not matter anyway, with the new restrictions that have been put in place suspect that it will take a lot longer to get any information back.

You are 100 percent right, thay have no obligation to stick to a turn around, so it can be 3 or 4 weeks and it is still within the agreement.

never had to "eventually acknowledge to myself", unlock some indications, never cards one way or the other when the notification of ability or denial to unlock would arrive. Bottom line, never really cared when it came, you disputed it not me

/rofl getting all those iphones unlocked did not even rate an entry in my todo list, they all have been sitting in the junkbox since they where deactivated, they would still be sitting there if the ability to unlock did not rear it's head. On a scale of 1 to 10 for unlock, getting it unlocked rate about a -100000. Don;t have to leave ATT for verizon or sprint, already have phones from them that are active, same with rogers, o2 and globalstar

Personally - there should be no estimated time give, just a blanket statement

"You will recieve a email once we complete the investigation to see if the device qualifies to be unlocked"

with no time lists, so if it takes 1 hour to invetigate or 3 weeks, it does not matter. This is a dead horse, poor thing has been beat enough. Take care

The number on the SIM card has nothing to do with the information that AT&T is asking for. For non-att customers, you need either the phone number or account number of the previous account holder. That isn't either the number on the SIM or the IMEI number of the phone.

When I brought the phone, it was brand new. Inside the box was a SIM card AT§T which has a phone number. I never used this card, because I am not in USA, so I do not know the number. I checked in my country how can you check this number and told me that we should dictate to the 20 digit code . Can you may want to check the same way?

You do not need your SIM number. Call AT&T via Skype and see if the phone is eligible. The number is in my signature. You will need to give them your Imei number found by going to settings>general>about.

Calling is the only way to determine if your iphone is eligible for unlocking.

Can I get iPhone 4S unlocked after paying ETF ?

I have an iPhone 4s with ATnT only for 2 months now however as I am moving Overseas I guess I need to terminate my contract by paying the ETF. My question is, after paying the ETF will I get the iPhone unlocked by ATnT so that I can use it outside USA. Customer care isn't sure if ATnT will unlock iPhone under such circumstances.

Re: Can I get iPhone 4S unlocked after paying ETF ?
[ Edited ]

Just wanted to post my story, maybe it can help some others! I bought an iPhone 4S at Best Buy for the off-contract pricing. I had been told that AT&T would unlock the phone, if I called them. I contacted AT&T on 04/22/12 and requested that the phone be unlocked. I explained to them that I had paid full purchase price for the phone. The rep said that he would open a case, and I would know something in 5-7 days, and to expect a call from AT&T on 04/30/12. Well, that date came and went and nothing out of AT&T. I called them 3 times, 30th, 1st, and 2nd, and inquired about my case. All they would tell me was that it was "still in processing". The last person I talked to even told me to call Apple and see what the hold up was. I did so, knowing that it was futile, and as expected got no results from them. Being rather frustrated, I attempted to contact the Corporate offices to try to get the ball rolling. That too was futile. After doing some Googling, I found and email address for customer care, <removed>. I sent an email to them at about midnight last night, explaining that I was still waiting for an unlock code. I didn't expect a response until today, but about 45 minutes later, I got a response from a customer care rep. She advised me that I needed to email, or fax, a copy of my purchase receipt. I fired back an email with a photo of the receipt. I received the unlock email this morning at about 8:00 and my iPhone is now unlocked!

<removed>

Hope this helps someone!

EDIT: I should note that I am NOT and have NEVER been an AT&T customer, so, they WILL unlock iPhones for those who are not customers, but paid full price for the phone.

My Device: Apple iPhone 4S - 64GB White
Unlocked Replacement iPhone 4S

Hey everyone! Today was a terrific day for me. Yesterday, I contacted AT&T International Care about unlocking my iPhone 4S for use in Canada later this summer. I originally purchased the iPhone 4S; 64GB white version on release day last October. However, last February, my iPhone 4S had problems with it's Sleep / Wake button and Apple told me it needed to be replaced, and that their was nothing they could do to fix the current model. Apple replaced the iPhone under warranty at no cost to me. When I realized that this was technically a new iPhone, different from the one I purchased under contract, I wondered if I could use it if I ended up going to Canada this summer, by unlocking it. So that's why I contacted AT&T International Care. I told them that I had needed to unlock my iPhone 4S, it had been replaced last February and I wanted to use it in Canada later this summer. The employee verified I had activated a new iPhone 4S on my line in February and then proceeded to make a case number for me. Today I received an Email from AT&T stating; "We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you; your issue has been resolved and if you have anymore questions, please call our 1-800 number for assistance. Thank you for choosing AT&T." Knowing that this was not generally the message you receive for a verified unlocked iPhone; I hesitantly restored my iPhone 4S in iTunes. Sure enough, I received the; "Congratulations! Your iPhone has been unlocked." message after the restore in iTunes. My number also identifies as "n/a" in iTunes, a common symptom for an AT&T-unlocked iPhone. So now, it appears I have a white 64GB unlocked iPhone 4S for use on any GSM network I choose. I've been an AT&T customer since 2007, with the first-generation iPhone, so I have no plans to leave; but I'm happy to know this worked for me, and I wanted to share the experience with you guys. Good luck if anyone else has a similar situation, and I wish you luck. Sometimes, I am glad I chose AT&T. Thanks guys!

No, AT&T will unlock iPhones for those who can supply proof that they paid full price for the iPhone.

Hi, I'm from Brazil and i got my Iphone 4 16GB around April 2011, paid full price for it (around $700 W/taxes) and it's carrier locked to at&t, since I don't live in the US anymore, I would like to unlock it(since they're unlocking them now).

I can't call their local support because I'm not in the US anymore, and I don't have an account to have online support, so any tips to where I go for some help, I probably still have the receipt somewhere, and do know where to find serial numbers, EMEI, still have my original at&t SIM that came with it, original box and everything.

Any help is appreciated

Thanks in advance

Re: Can I get iPhone 4S unlocked after paying ETF ?

I am lucky I got one iphone 4 and one iphone 2g unlocked. I am not a AT&T customer, but lucky they opened a case and did it for me.

I think those people who are not At&T customers like me and want to unlock iphone, they should call AT&T quick before they changed their mind.

I always concern they may change the rule later limits to AT&T customer only.

good luck. :smileytongue:

I am lucky I got one iphone 4 and one iphone 2g unlocked. I am not a AT&T customer, but lucky they opened a case and did it for me.

I think those people who are not At&T customers like me and want to unlock iphone, they should call AT&T quick before they changed their mind.

I always concern they may change the rule later limits to AT&T customer only.

good luck. :smileytongue:

the rules have changed already, you have to supply the phone number or account number that is / was associated with the iphone now. IMEI number is no longer a consideration. I included a copy of the new rules a few posts up from here
