almost all phones now have text capabilities, so that is not a problem.
in fact, you may be hard pressed to find one without.
usually pda's or blackberries are the best to text with because of the qwerty keypads, but other phones (such as the older Nokia 9300) has flip open keypads for text capabilites.
if the qwerty keypad is not needed, then even some of the cheapest phones will suit you needs quite well.
