Adding Contracts To Account Without Customer Permission
05-05-2012 01:00:56 PM
I have proof that AT&T actually added a one-year price agreement for internet services to my account without my permission, and then charged me a termination fee when I disconnected the service.
I had an original agreement to receive a discounted rate for one year. After 8 months they stopped applying the credit. When I inquired about why I was not receiving my credit, they gave me the credit back, but at the same time, without my knowledge or permission, signed me on for an additional year of service.
They told me over the phone that there is no way this could have happened, that all of these discounted rates decisions and such are made by management level employees who always tell the customer the terms. Since I clearly did not recall this conversation with them, I went back and found out why....because I didn't have the conversation. All of the correspondence was in writing through their email support. I have now found a copy of all instances of that email thread with the support department. And there was no mention at all that I was signing up for another year of service. Just that I was getting the credit originally owed because it had not yet been 12 months.
To top it off, the date they claim I inquired to add another year of service, for the few minutes I was at home and awake that day, there is no way I with everything going that day that I called AT&T about my internet price. I just double checked my phone records to prove that as well.....no call made to AT&T that day.
Anyone know who I can talk to regarding this? Times must be pretty bad for a company to be secretly adding service contracts to customer accounts.

Glad to be of assistance, and that everything got worked out.
I think this is just a sign of the times though, as most companies with subscription or contract based services are using auto-renewal features on the user accounts and forcing the customers to opt out of it instead of opting in. Especially if the customer is on autopay.
