High pings in evenings

Hi,
I'm on a wired connection and a lot of evenings my ping shoots up. Since I spend a lot of time gaming this isn't ideal, especially when I've mainly stayed with AT&T due to low ping when I could get much higher speeds for the same/lower price elsewhere.
Tracing route to www.l.google.com [74.125.227.80]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms READYSHARE [10.0.0.1]
2 7 ms 7 ms 7 ms adsl-108-86-115-254.dsl.stl2mo.sbcglobal.net [10
8.86.115.254]
3 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms 12.83.40.61
4 126 ms 126 ms 126 ms gar23.dlstx.ip.att.net [12.122.85.73]
5 170 ms 180 ms 169 ms 12.249.185.18
6 128 ms 128 ms 115 ms 72.14.233.65
7 95 ms 92 ms 92 ms 209.85.250.199
8 110 ms 111 ms 113 ms dfw06s07-in-f16.1e100.net [74.125.227.80]
Evening after evening those traceroutes are the same to multiple sites and gaming servers. I'm getting routed through Dallas, TX (I'm near St. Louis, MO) and the ping jumps way up there, anywhere from 125ms with jumps up to 500+.
Also, I realize this isn't the forum support's fault, but I'd like to leave some feedback for AT&T's support site: It's awful. I had to click around in a hundred circles that didn't answer any questions I had and led me back to the same pages over and over again until I finally found the forum link that I wanted in the first place.
