I received the following from att:
I was discussing this issue with an Email escalation agent and there is presently an identified defect that is being worked by the dev team for the email servers.
It has been confirmed as a known issue. They were not able to provide me an estimated resolution date. One option you might try is change the SSL ports 465/995 to legacy non-SSL ports 110/25 respectively and see if it allows send and receive with no disconnects. Other than that option, I can offer no further support for outlook. Considering the scope of the issue, it’s is likely it will be resolved soon. We thank you for your patience in this matter and for being a valued AT&T customer.

I’ve had this exact same problem intermittently for well over four years. I have six e-mail addresses under our DSL account, and the “invalid user name or password” would nearly always start with the same one of the addresses, sometimes gradually “spreading” to all the rest. Most often it would clear up the next day on its own, sometimes a log in/out of webmail would fix it, and occasionally I’d have to delete the problem account and re-enter it to clear it up. After a personal letter to the supreme AT&T President/CEO’s home inDallasin late 2010, my “Internet never works in extreme temperatures or when it’s raining” (which had gone on consistently for three years) was resolved, but the password one continued. Last week, for the first time ever, the problem returned but refused to clear (thanks to everyone in this and other blogs for the great suggestions, but all were to no avail), so I reluctantly began calling Tech Support again. After encountering some of the rudest people on the planet (forgive me, but I now sorely miss the old offshore support people), I was told (depending upon who I spoke to) that it was either Microsoft’s or Yahoo’s fault and that they could and would offer no help. Based upon testing with Outlook 2003, 2007 and 2010 on several different machines at two locations as well as an Android App, plus assistance from my corporate IT staff, pretty much nothing worked, and thus I think that I can rule out Microsoft, given the identical Android (Asus Transformer Prime running Ice Cream Sandwich) experience. If I’m not mistaken, Yahoo is a subcontractor with AT&T. In a conference call with AT&T Tech Support and Yahoo, the latter also blamed Microsoft. After numerous calls to the “AT&T Executive Support” number (e-mails from them note “AT&T Office of the President” but they refuse to identify which one of these) I was eventually called back and told that (direct quote) “AT&T no longer supports the use of any third party software” period. I documented numerous current AT&T promotional materials that welcomingly say otherwise, and I even called Customer Service, saying that I was interested in signing up for their top tier service (which imagine my surprise has often been suggested as a resolution for this problem) but I expressed my concern about their support for third party email clients. No problem, said all sources, we sure do support them! There are numerous problems here, starting with offering excuses with no solutions in exchange for payments regularly received from me, and ending with luring customers with a product promised to be supported that will not actually prove to be after the contract is made. AT&T has been dead last in customer satisfaction the past couple of years, and they appear to be clawing their way even further downward. Stay away from AT&T at all costs. Still awaiting a solution, refusing to pay any more bills until that happens, headed to court if necessary (luckily, my wife was an attorney that VP Cheney nicknamed "Chainsaw").

Great thread. Glad I found it.
Same issues with att / yahoo mail. This issue started for me 4 weeks ago on one of my 2 att.net email accounts. (bellsouth.net) accounts. I've used the service for years. POP'ing to Express & Outlook clients of every vintage..2000, 03, 07 and 2010. Then, all of a sudden, the login failures begin. I WILL NOT spend another second with att support. If someone tells me that "there is no problem since webmail works"...so sorry..one more time, I will scream! Of course, they offered me their super special tech support line for $15/mo for a 1 year subscription or a one time $49 charge... WHAT!... Come on guys...something has changed in the back office at Yahoo at the direction of at&t around the upgrade and configuration of the dedicated at&t email infrastructure.
It appears to be a cascading change as well. I say that because my 1st email address started the issue 4 weeks ago... then, my second one started 3 days ago. Seems they are systematically changing configurations. That might explain whay some of your have had the issue for a longer or shorter period of time.
Changing Outlook settings - no help
Uninstalling Outlook and Office, Reinstalling and setting up POP again - no help
My fix - I opted to get a set of new email addresses (Yahoo Mail PLUS) not affiliated with at&t. I set up my Outlook for the new addresses. Then, I went into my attYahoo webmail and set the emails to Forward to my new YahooMail Plus addresses. For me. The problem was solved.
This seemed to be the best option. Folks can continue to send me email using my long standing BellSouth address, I can get those messages once more through a properly functioning Outlook client and slowly introduce a new emaill address without abruptly changing email identities.
This may not be a fix for everyone... at this stage, I am over dealing with the nonsense! There is something going on with att and yahoo and att is not coming clean. I can no longer waste my time. It's time to start the seperation process.
Good luck. I hope my fix offers a few of you some help.

As a follow up, in the wee hours of this morning I went in to webmail to see what might have been received into the still most problematic of my e-mail accounts (I was getting the same old familiar pop-up error via Outlook). A few seconds after logging in to webmail it began repeatedly disconnecting (a message appeared on screen). I also kept getting an insistent message out of webmail that I needed to update my flash player (which is not correct) – very bizarre. I had explained to Tech Support dozens of times in years past that webmail itself has also been an intermittent issue, but as soon as it was working at the particular second that I was speaking with someone, it was immediately “sorry, not an AT&T problem - can’t help – bye – CLICK.” Very clearly this is and has been an AT&T problem – in any case, my service deal is with AT&T and not Yahoo (Microsoft has been ruled out since I had the same problem with my Android tablet). My (huge international) company has recently jumped ship from them to Comcast for similar service reasons. Again, we need solutions, not excuses.

I have the same problem and AT&T has not been wanting to help. they claim it is an Outlook problem!
It is not!! I've paid Microsoft to check it out and they temporarily changed my Server to GMAIL and my outlook worked just fine!
i think they are trying to force their customers to use only their Yahoo webmail--Hello!!! that's where their Advertising is-- therefor their money. I will drop AT&T before I let them push me into something!

It is not an outlook problem; it cost me 39.99 to find that out1 I wish I could bill At&T for it. thay kept telling me it was OUTLOOK. the outlook Tech set up a GMAIL account on my Pc temporarily and my Outlook worked just fine!

A few days ago everything changed radically for us – suddenly all was working again (for awhile). All six of our e-mail addresses became wonderfully functional, no clue if that was just my normal multi-year intermittent no-service pattern or from any direct AT&T intervention, but I’m betting against the latter, given their abhorrent track record. Several days ago I sent an e-mail to the manager of the “AT&T Office of the President” customer (alleged) support team regarding what they suggested that I do next (as in, are you going to even make a token effort any more). I never received a response, so I presumed that the answer was zip, zilch, nada, bupkiss, sayonara, seeya, etc. As expected, after the brief clear up the multi-year pattern began anew, with the occasional error message from that one particular pesky e-mail address.
The even worse news is that Yahoo has announced the layoff of 2,000 workers (14% of their workforce), [edited to comply with Guidelines] , which can only mean possibly even worse things for we whatcha call (for now) paying customers.
Just got off the phone with ANOTHER customer no-service person, calling to ask about the terrible follow-up rating I had given to one of their no-support people (one of the extremely rude ones). Again, the goal appeared to be finding someone to blame, not actually DOING anything about the problem. She backed the AT&T truck up even further away from its customers, saying that their "responsibility ended at an Internet connection." Bye - CLICK!
Great point about the gmail account - ours ALWAYS works flawlessly as well via Outlook and AT&T - the only problems are with Yahoo accounts. I'm all for some social network activism here - not well versed in it, but please advise!

This is getting ridiculous. How could major companies like AT&T and Yahoo can't figure this problem out. It is very frustrating. How many customers would they like to lose before they take this seriously?

I'm having the same issue - just started yesterday (4/20). I can get in fine on webmail, but Outlook 2010 client not accepting my passwords. ATT tech support said they can't help with Outlook client issues, suggested the SupportPlus service, which as noted before is expensive ($15/month w. 1 year commitment). This is very frustrating - obvlously an ATT issue, else why would so many encounter it. Fix it ATT!!

Just sent this out {Personal content removed for your safety} President AT&T suggest you do the same.
I have contacted AT&T directly 6~7 times over the last several months in order to resolve an issue between AT&T and computer based mail programs.
Microsoft Outlook
Windows Live Mail
Mozilla Thunderbird
What has been occurring is the failure to authenticate properly between the AT&T server and any computer based mail software. I have tried everything suggested including;
- Confirmation of password
- Confirmation of Settings
- Deleting Account from software and reinstall
- Changing server between (pop.att.yahoo.com, & inbound.att.net)
Still to no avail, yet can go to webmail where I can send, receive with no problems. As a last ditch effort if I reset password in my profile the software based (Outlook, Live) work for about a week then it goes down. Needless to say I’m frustrated at AT&T’s lack of addressing this issue since it appears to be widespread based on several forums http://forums.att.com/t5/Email-Internet-Security/O
I have had service with AT&T for many years including
- Personal wireless
- Business wireless
- DSL
- Home Phone
- Long distance
Can you check into this matter in order to resolve, & I’ll be awaiting your reply.

outlook login issue, temporary fix,
go to att.net, log in as normal, once you have logged in go the the top right where it says "Hi, whoever" (whoever example only) click on your name showing as bold characters, this will bring up a verify password screen although you have already signed in. re-enter your password, once you do this this will allow outlook to work.
How ever it only seems to work for a day or 2 before I have to repeat this same process. I will now call ATT for the 10th time
and proudly let them know to not tell me this issue is on my end and not there end and quit trying to sell me on the $50 tech support charge for an outlook issue.

I've tried every suggestion I found herein (THANKS for that, seeing's how AT&T has abdicated their responsibities on this), but the problem still comes and goes randomly, right now only on one of my six e-mail addresses. The third party paid-for efforts are a waste of money (my IT staff is excellent - they also point to AT&T), and there is ZERO doubt that Outlook is NOT the problem (I've now seen the exact same issue with my Android and another e-mail client, and only Yahoo based accounts are the problem). I've just refused to pay for another month and will continue to do so until I receive the service that I've signed up for. As noted elsewhere, they're still telling potential new customers up front that their service works FINE with Outlook. Call, gripe, and post!

After sending letter to CEO several days ago I received call from Atlanta office where someone took my issue and was going to have tech support contact me. I called again after 24hours then some SOB called me back (absolute lack of intelligence) and kept giving me the script that this was not AT&T problem. Refused any further help on the matter, he actually acknowledge the problem but refused to resolve because AT&T email works on web based. I am totally fed up with them, this started late last year after running smoothly for several years. Leads me to believe Yahoo is demanding only web based in order to get advertising dollars.

This problem has been going on for me - for just over a month now, not on Outlook, but with the newer Windows Live Mail. After going on and off for a couple of weeks - I switched to Mozilla Thunderbird and that worked for just over a week - now it too has the same problem. Lots of calls to tech support in India, the Philippines, and the U.S. NONE of them have been able to help BUT - for the first time tonight a guy in India told me that they have been getting so many calls on the subject that the supervisor is now requiring them to write down how many they get per shift! HA! I'm afraid we're in for a LONG wait on this one.

This sounds more like a server "Handshake" issue to put it in layman's terms. There seems to be a "delay" between when he request is sent for mail from outlook, and when it's decoded by AT&T servers and actually processed. This causes the server to "timeout" before it finds your login and can process it. The result is a default message that the username is invalid or doesn't exist because they haven't allotted enough time for the complete process to occur and if they sent everyone the message that it timed out, they'd be admitting to their shortcomings and that's bad for business. This is also why it’s only an intermittent issue. The vague-ness of this particular response is easier to hide behind and doesn't ascribe fault. The hang up is in the "decoding" of the outlook (or any mail client's andrioid or iOS even) and the time allowed to return that response. It's literally in the smallest fraction of a millisecond that it trips up. AT&T is optimized for the yahoo mail client, so it will always connect unless they're creek is REALLY low on paddles. That's why you can almost always still log in under webmail. It's the fastest pipeline and has the best chance to connect. A few things can help, but unfortunately, they're on the AT&T side.
- They can "open up" that piing time - or the time it takes to return that "handshake" but a millisecond and it would most likely connect. However, that's not as minor as it might sound when you consider the traffic on the line. It WILL slow things down and not just for email.
- They can develop a faster exchange protocol - I'm sure they're trying this option, but I doubt it's a priority
- They can upgrade to faster servers - not the cheapest option
Any way you look at it, the system is flawed and not on the outlook side -- this is DEFINATELY an AT&T server issue, whether they will admit it or even have the technical savvy at the customer service level to be aware of it, it's still their issue. It's out of the our, the user's, hands. All we can do is continue with the work-arounds or move on.

The outlook issue has started again for me today after being absent for over a month. Stange as they had a major outage yesterday. 2 of 3 emails address are not working again. I concur that it is an att yahoo email server issue.

I think the issue is pretty straght forward. As all of us whom have post in this fourm have spent numerous hours on the phone with tech support people who do not have a clue. Myself as well as the others have checked an rechecked our settings. I think the questions are better ask of the engineers whom work on the att servers. Maybe they should be forced to use outlook to get a first hand knowledge of our flustrations.

No Blue Envelope on my page
After customer service/tech support advised me to remove my AT&T account from Outlook, I am no longer able to add it back. The setup in outlook tries to connect and the password issuse prevents me from adding the account
Now, not only do I NOT have email, I cannot add the account, I guess it doesn't matter, couldn't sign in for msgs anyway
Lousey Service, make that no service

I have had this problem with my sbcglobal.net email for a month now; I can no longer get my email on my Outlook client, however my wife's email (using the same Outlook settings) continues to work just fine. I have tried the various workarounds suggested here but nothing gets me past the 0x800CCC92 error. Very frustrating. I finally signed up for this helpful community in hopes that one more voice will help AT&T resolve the issue for the many that are affected and don't WANT to use website.
