DNS Problems with NVG510

Is there a way to force the NVG510 to use a different DNS (e.g. google dns or opendns)?  I'm at the end of my rope with these stupid, non-working, worthless machines.  Just when I thought I had it working somewhat reliably, after going through 4 nvg510s, and after dealing with inexpliccable wireless issues, I come home from vacation and I can't open web pages 1/2 the time because the DNS server doesn't work.

No.  Power cycling the modem doesn't fix it.  Sometimes going into config and resetting it does, but that generally lasts only for less than a day.  Here is an example of what I'm getting in the log.

I'm literally on the verge of cutting my losses with ATT and just canceling and getting cable setup.  This is absolutely ridiculous.

Re: DNS Problems with NVG510

It appears the NVG510 has some issues with its DNS timeout.

(See this thread: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r26570998-Motorola-NVG510-owners-any-DNS-problems-)

The actual servers are fine.

The two solutions found are either to set the DNS manually on the computers behind the router directly (you can use the AT&T one or Google's DNS servers for example: http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/)

Another option is to force the NVG510 into bridge mode (http://forums.att.com/t5/Features-and-How-To/NVG510-Bridge-Mode/td-p/2890841/page/2), put a decent router behind it, and manually set the DNS servers on that router.

It seems to solve these problems.

Re: DNS Problems with NVG510

i have had the same problem for awhile, with my new U-verse connection and Motorola NVG510 MODEM.

TIER 2 TECH SUPPORT helped me out. i am running ""WINDOWS 7 ! ! !"" (64 BIT, BUT 32 BIT should be the same)

THIS PROCEEDURE is EASY, but it NEEDS TO BE DONE ON EACH COMPUTER CONNECTED TO YOUR MODEM!

MY COMPUTER IS HARD WIRED,  IF YOU ARE WIRELESS CONNECTED, the proceedure may be different,

I HONESTLY DON'T KNOW about that proceedure. BUT, you can contact TIER TWO TECH SUPPORT to find out.

they instructed me to GO TO "control panel".

OPEN "network and sharing center"

OPEN "change adapter settings" (you will see it near the top of the left side)

RIGHT CLICK "local area connection" and select "properties" (its at the bottom of the box that opens when you "right click")

CLICK ON "internet protocol version 4"  and then CLICK ON  "properties"  down below it .(the box in front of  "internet protocol version 4" should have a checked mark, leave it that way)

another window will open, about 2/3 of the way down you can SELECT "use the following DNS server addresses"

there are 2 Entry slots (keep in mind, i'm in northern california, so you may have to ask AT&T TECH SUPPORT for your particular DNS server addresses)

in the "preferred DNS server" slot, Tech Support had me enter 8.8.8.8. (the DOTS are already there)

in the "secondary DNS server" slot, Tech Support had me enter 8.8.4.4.

CLICK  "ok" to save settings.

REMEMBER- those FOUR DIGIT DNS SERVER addresses are likely REGIONAL to NORTHERN CA. so Contact

Following This Proceedure, FIXED 98% of my DNS issues

I HOPE YOU HAVE THE SAME GOOD LUCK !

Re: DNS Problems with NVG510

The steps are correct, but you'll need to put at&t DNS IP Primary:  68.94.156.1 and DNS secondary:  68.94.157.1 then you should have any problems, I had to do just that on my computer, after that it was back to normal.

Re: DNS Problems with NVG510

hi "defline"  its good you mentioned that,  i have (in the same context menu, Directly above where you insert the DNS SERVER ADDRESSES in the instructions i posted) the option to ""obtain an IP automatically"" or - ""use the following IP address""  and i assume you mean i should select the Manual option ? is that correct ? the first slot is labled ""IP address"" (pretty straight forward)  BUT the next two options i see are labled ""subnet mask"" (is that where you insert the DNS secondary IP ?) or The Third entry slot labled ""Default Gateway"" (which is probably not where the secondary goes... but i wanted to ask...)  and i'm wandering WHY (Incompetence Perhaps?) The TIER TWO TECH told me to leave that Alone ?.......  i really Appreciate your input, and hope you can give some clarification...  (my particular problem was in fact solved without the AT&T IP DNS addresses inserted, for the most part anyway.... )  and i'm just curious are you in california as well?

 thanks Again !

Re: DNS Problems with NVG510

ok, i posted a question to "DEFLINE" regarding his response  to me. i was not clear from his message about whether to insert the "" AT&T  DNS IP Primary:  68.94.156.1 and DNS secondary:  68.94.157.1 "" into the same slots where i entered

Primary: 8.8.8.8.  and  secondary:  8.8.4.4.   it obviously is what he meant  because i tested his settings and mine, and they both worked pretty well at solving my issues, it seemed as if i was getting a little bit better response from his settings on some websites,  and in turn other websites may have loaded a lil' bit quicker on the DNS addresses that theTier Two Tech Gave me. the differences were so Negligible that it is hardly worth mentioning. but like i said in my first post, I believe the settings I was given are regional based on where I live. (Sacramento). I would try his settings first, especially if you don't live in california.

there is one thing I forgot to mention in my first post.

after the settings are changed and you close the adapter settings menu, the troubleshooter will open and run.

just go ahead and let it do its thing, and when it's done.... just close it. no problem.

I have done this procedure on a few computers, at my brothers house, and my father's house, as well my own...

and so far, so good.

so good luck to all of you, I hope it works out, and fixes your issues.

and Thanks to "Defline", and  "TIER 2 TECH SUPPORT".

Re: DNS Problems with NVG510
[ Edited ]

I HOPE, I was able to help. that was my sincere desire when I posted HERE.

I spent a half an hour trying to find out how to delete my second post THE ONE THAT STARTS OUT: ""HI DEFLINE""....

i wrote that post because I was confused and need some clarification on Deflines post. (so please disregard that posting ! ! ! )

what i cannot understand is why AT&T did not make it easy for me to find out that IMPORTANT DETAIL, that I cannot erase a post , IF I FIND THAT I NEED TOO ???  What the heck ?...

IF THIS IMPORTANT DETAIL IS CLEARLY written here somewhere, I must've missed it.

I do not believe that it is. and I really don't appreciate it if it is not.

what the heck happened to The Concept of BETTER COMMUNICATION...that this site is about ? (that was a question)

the reason I wanted to erase it was that it was not Helpful, and i thought it would be confusing to somebody who came to the site looking for help.  and Brevity is important, when the reader MIGHT ALREADY be a bit confused.

I Finally Found the question asked and answered in another part of the forums, by another user. but it took Forever... is it a secret ?

why did I have to go to all that trouble to find out something that should be clearly POSTED ? ? ?

it's really not that big a deal I suppose but I don't like having my time wasted when it is unnecessary.

so I thought I would do the next most logical thing and EDIT my current post, since THAT option WAS in the context menu.

AND HERE'S THE REALLY COOL PART, after i EDITED....i hit the post button.. AND AT&T GIVES ME A POPUP MESSAGE THAT MY TIME HAS EXPIRED....  oh Good, PERFECT..... JUST DANDY.

ARE YOU HEARING ME AT&T ?

Because i am not the First Person BY A LONG SHOT, to find this Frustrating.

its OK if you WANT TO LOCK A POST ... THAT IS I GUESS, SINCE SITE MEDIATION IS OBVIOUSLY TOO MUCH TROUBLE.... fine.

But how about NOT making us go through all the horse pucky , that i just Described... to find out ?

would That be to much Trouble ?

i have been an AT&T CUSTOMER for Most of my life, so pardon me if i believe that my opinion matters. if i seem Hot headed, its because i found out i'm not the first to have a problem with this?....   i have many Techie Friends, and their opinion is that i'm wasting my time TO MAKE A POINT,... but after all, whats a little more wasted time.

the last thing i'm going to say is,.. i would prefer to be ignored, than Patronized... seriously.

thank you for your consideration.

if ANYBODY is reading this,  and you know where it can be re-posted, where it might do some good, please... feel free..

Bless All of You.

Have a better DAY !  :smileytongue:

Re: DNS Problems with NVG510

Sorry about the late reply

It's the second option in the internet protocol version 4 box

"use the following DNS server addresses"

DNS IP Primary  68.94.156.1

DNS secondary  68.94.157.1

So far mine is working perfect.

Re: DNS Problems with NVG510
Couldn't agree more! AT&T was really at&t (small caps) on this issue! I'm new to u-Verse with this modem/router and got no help from AT&T on this major equipment malfunction. My IPhone/IPad arsenal of devices had ongoing errors (lots of ? where pics should be). Multiple contacts with tech support failed. I stumbled on the DNS workaround from this forum, which has proven more helpful than anyone at AT&T. Dismal customer service!
