Is this just likely a limitation of the Wii?  Since I am finding that I can stream via wireless to my laptop even when I am uploading.

 That appears to be the case, but I have no direct experience with Wii. and no friends (with a Wii) that are using it in a similar manner.

Check / try the stuff that David recommends; it all sounds like a reasonable possibility.
