Stuck in Yahoo/SBC email account neverneverland

I want to do something very simple: delete a yahoo account. However, I am stuck in an endless loop between Yahoo! and AT&T.

Short Story:

My yahoo ID was merged with SBC DSL years ago. I have since moved on to U-verse and have an @ATT.net email address associated with my account. When I go to the Yahoo! delete account page it says I must contact ATT. When I call ATT they don't have a clue what to do. I just want to delete the stupid Yahoo account for crying out loud. Why? For many reasons, but the fact is it shouldn't matter why. I should be able to delete it for any reason I want. Anyone have a clue?

Long Story:

It all started when I first signed up for DSL service years ago with SBC/Yahoo!. At that time they offered the convenient feature of using your existing Yahoo! account as your new DSL email account and called it merging. Well, anyone that did this (me included) forever relegated that Yahoo! account to SBC never to be returned again. I found documentation online from the original FAQ regarding this merging and it stated that if you terminated your SBC DSL account you would have to pay $9.95 per month to keep your Yahoo! ID.

Regardless, fast forward to today. I have never cancelled my original DSL service, but rather "upgraded" to U-verse in 2009. I maintained my old xyz@sbcglobal.net email account throughout the whole process. Then someone registered a Yahoo! email account exactly the same as mine except added a "1" at the end. They then conveniently forgot to include the "1" on about 90% of their website registrations and other correspondence. So I end up with their mail and suddenly loads of SPAM. Sigh. I call AT@T and after much hardship finally am able to get a new xyz@att.net email account setup and associated with my U-verse account. They supposedly deleted my old xyz@sbcglobal.net account. So then I go to the Yahoo! account deletion page and login only to find this:yahoo delete.pngThat number is the AT&T help line. So I called them back and explained it all again and they said since it happened when I had DSL, they had to transfer me to DSL. That guy tried to help, but since I was a U-verse customer couldn't do much. So he tried to start a 3-way call including U-verse but instead just transferred me back to U-verse support and the new person had no clue what I was talking about. Thank you, CLICK. I tried searching through Yahoo! help and found a link for people with Yahoo!/ATT merged accounts. That gets me this:

http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?locale=en_US&page=content&y=PROD_ACCT&id=SLN2679&impressions=true

It's the same story, "AT&T holds the only key to this mystery." The problem is they have apparently lost the key never to be found again. Help!!!

The problem with that is it's impossible to tell EVERYONE that you've ever given that email address to that it's no longer valid. You know, people you don't talk to regularly. Plus, that account gets legitimate mail for another person that forgets to add the 1 at the end when he gives out his address. So for both of these cases the best thing would be for the account to be closed and send back a bad address reply so people  would know.

That's why it's good to make gmail your main email account, it's not dependant on a provider and never will give you these problems. :smileywink:

Re: Stuck in Yahoo/SBC email account neverneverland

thanks for your reply.

I have had a gmail account and an apple .me account that I use as base accounts. my att account was from over 10 years ago as an sbcglobal account. I then upgraded to uverse and used the addresses a bit. I am no longer a uverse customer and have contacted everyone I know about the new addresses.  the yahoo account is still getting mail. I have had it forwarded to my current addresses but it has been long enough.  I want anyone who uses one of the old addresses to get a dead end when it is sent.

how hard could it be for att or yahoo to delete this account?  when I called the number they actually told me to google the answer!  I still have a wireless account with them.  if they had any type of customer service what so ever they would have gotten me to someone who can delete the account.

Re: Stuck in Yahoo/SBC email account neverneverland

I can go one better than that! I always had a Yahoo email account. When I started my DSL sevice with SBC, I had them use the same email address but with @sbcglobal instead of @yahoo. I continuted to use the Yahoo account until I made the big mistake of signing up for something on the web that generated hundreds of spam a day. So, I swithched over and started to use my @sbcglobal.net email. I tried and tried to close the Yahoo account, but to no avail. That ticked my off, so I set it so that all spam would come into the inbox. I figured once it got too full they would delete the account or at least bounce back the mail because the box was full. But noooooo. I just checked and I have 55,505 emails sitting in the inbox. I'm wondering if that is Guiness Book of World Records. Oh, and if you had sub accounts linked with the @sbcglobal email, you are out of luck trying to delete them, as they no longer show up. I have two sub accounts and can't delete them either!

If that wasn't bad enough, I dropped my home phone service (which was in my ex's name), but they said my Intenet would go up unless I got another AT&T service. So, I opted for the cell phone service. He changed everything, but said the Internet would have to stay in my ex's name, since he couldn't change that (whould require another call) . I've been trying ever since to get it out of my ex's name, again to no avail. I still use the @sbcglobal email, because the @att mail goes out with my ex's name on it, and apparently it is linked to the bill, because I changed it everywhere I saw it on the email account page. Talk about frustration!!!

All this will be resolved when I drop my DLS service May 1st. Mainly because the person I talked to did not inform me that my Internet price was only good for one year, and apparently, that is THE ONLY way that I will finally get rid of my ex's name! Of course AT&T will still be maintaining all those email accounts I won't be using :-)

Re: Stuck in Yahoo/SBC email account neverneverland

So, how can I delete or change the password to my old ABC@sbcglobal.net email account?   It has been hijacked and spam is being sent from that account.  I can find no way to change the password (which would fix the problem) or delete the account (which I would love to do).

The problem is that the emails go to all of my old contacts, and they think it is from me...   I changed the account name to Ms SPAM SPAM, instead of my own name.   We'll see how that works.

@edawg636

Hi,

Just wondering, was this ever resolved?  I am actually facing a similar problem and I've been trying for YEARS to resolve it.

I use Yahoo.  All I want to do is change my Yahoo password.  It's an old password and easy to hack.  Every time I try Yahoo's regular "change password" links, they direct me to AT+T.  That's fine as I know the AT+T account it was linked to.  Unfortunately, when I try to log in with the AT+T account, I am told that account is expired/deleted.

Several calls to Yahoo and AT+T over the years have not been able to resolve it.  The key seems to be in AT+T.  On my last call, I was told the old AT+T account was deleted and nothing could be done to unlink it to Yahoo.  So, basically, they were telling me they had no solution:  my password could NOT be changed.

I find this unacceptable and I'm still trying to find an answer to this (seemingly) simple problem!

Let me know if you had any luck.

@ksrph - I know you've tried a bunch of things to resolve this but since I'm not certain of everything you've tried, are you able to reset your password using this link: https://www.att.com/olam/forgotPasswordAction.olamexecute?forgotPasswordActionEvent=forgotPasswordSt...

Re: Stuck in Yahoo/SBC email account neverneverland

I have been to that password reset page a bunch of times.   I am stuck in this blind loop with all these other poor souls.

I had DSL for a short period of time, made the HUGE mistake of merging my prior yahoo address with my new "primary" address, and STUPIDLY listed that yahoo email as the contact email.  So, I can get a password for the ATT account sent to my now hacked Yahoo account which I cannot access because it is merged to the "primary" att account.  I have other sub accounts in this mess that are still working, but they may end up in the same loop.

I am hoping like Heck I can find somebody who has solved this problem.

Meanwhile, Verizon is sounding good to me . . . . .

For de-linking email accounts, you'd generally contact Web Assistance Center at the customer-facing number 866-755-0463. I'm not sure of the process on unlinking them on the web, however I'm sure there is a way.
