Improving Wireless Speed

Wireless Community

I have established a homegroup wireless network consisting of a Lenovo T520, Lenovo T400 (11b/g/n wireless Lan Mini-PCI Express Adaptor II) and a Lacie-d2 NAS, all connected through my new U-Verse2Wire 3801HGV. I have contracted for 12 Mbps service and get ~11.46 not bad. But when I either share files between computers (wirelessly) or upload or download files from the NAS the best I can do is ~3 Mbps. I would think I could get something better than that. I realize wireless networks are slow and I could increase speed through a wired network but that sort of defeats the flexibility of have a wireless network. SO I primarily run my backups at night and the system shuts itself down. Anyone out there knows of anything I might try to increase my wireless speed.

Re: Improving Wireless Speed

Did you check SomeJoe's post on :

Might find some useful info to increase your wireless speed.  Personally I'm a wired user as I don't want the slower speeds/connection problems w/wireless.  Good luck :smileywink:

Re: Improving Wireless Speed

Since the 3801HGV is wireless g as opposed to wireless n, you would expected to see relatively slow speeds sharing and transferring files wirelessly between devices on your network.

Also, I have a wired desktop, I wireless desktop, and 2 wireless laptops on my network.  I also have the Max (12/1.5) internet service.  My internet speed tests are consistently approximately 11.6 mbps down and 1.5 mbps up both wired and wireless.

The RGs, IMO, are a crap shoot when it comes to wireless, Some have no problems at all, and others have nothing but problems. That being said I would not rely on it solely for normal network communications, especially if there is a lot of large transfers with multiple computers or streaming. I could see using them for quick email, websurfing, or a wireless network printer, but I wouldn't use it as the sole networking medium because they have a tendency to fall down on the job when multiple connections require high throughput.

That being said there are some things you can try to improve your wireless speed with the RG, like changing your wireless channel or ensuring the transmission power is at maximum, or just relocating the RG. You should definitely be getting better than 3Mbs throughput.

What a lot of people do is to purchase a third party wireless router to install between the RG and their computers. That way, they can at least get "N" wireless, which is superior to the "G" wireless provided by the RG.

You also don't want to totally rely on online speedtests to determine your local network health as most of them use a specially optimized packet (file) for the test, and of course the test only last 10-15 seconds, which does nothing to determine sustained throughput.

And your wireless card needs to be n-capable, or you're just spinning your wheels. :smileywink:

If OP got something like a DLink DIR655 router (~$40 retail) they could use the "G" wireless on it and upgrade adapters to "N" as required.

IMO the DIR655 can kick the "G" out of a 2WIRE any day. :smileyvery-happy:
