Plus, that account gets legitimate mail for another person that forgets to add the 1 at the end when he gives out his address. So for both of these cases the best thing would be for the account to be closed and send back a bad address reply so people  would know.

That's why it's good to make gmail your main email account, it's not dependant on a provider and never will give you these problems.
