self install vs tech install
[ Edited ]

Ok, my six month price lock on my DSL ran out so I"m making my semianual call to get the price back down again and lo-n-behold, the rep up and tells me Uverse internet (internet only, no VOIP or TV) is available.

HOLY CRAP!!!!!

Yet I never once recieved an email from the quarterly requests for notification of availability. :smileymad::smileyfrustrated:

Now for the guts of the post.

I went online to check for myself and yes, it comes up as available, but oddly, if I pick the 12Mbs plan, it allows self install, but if I pick the 18Mbs plan, it requires a tech install. Could this be because the 18Mbs would require pair bonding, whereas the 12Mbs would not?

After checking it appears that both speeds use the same IG51X modem/gateway. I wonder if this is replacing the NVG510.

IIRC there were issues with the stability of the 18Mbs teir. Did they clear those issues up?

If they're only offering HSI, not TV/Phone, then it's not VDSL2, it's ADSL2+. Your RG model selection bears this out.  I believe that pair-bonding is only available for VDSL2 installations, not ADSL2+.  It's easy to see why.

18 Mbps will have a much lower tolerence for line problems than 12 Mbps, so they probably want a tech to come condition your line between the cross connect and your home, and possibly redo your wiring between the NID and your RG.

Already knew it was ADSL2+ because of the modem. Would not need any inside wiring or assitance. I guess I'll see if they'll waive the install fee considering all I'd need is someone to stroke the wires outside , if that.

Re: self install vs tech install

Well, it was fun while it lasted, but the euphoria is over.

I called retentions this afternoon to start the transfer and confirmed that in fact Uverse "IPDSL" is available, but the best they can manage is 6Mbs, which is no better than the "ATMDSL" I already have. The only advantage I'd get would be no caps, if they treat ADSL2+ Uverse like they do VDSL Uverse.

I feel like Charlie Brown, and Lucy (AT&T) just yanked the Uverse football away...   again. :smileyfrustrated:

I am so freakin' close to calling comcrap. :smileymad::smileymad:
