Mac Users - Outgoing SMTP Email Problems - No Support

So I've scoured the web and noticed that there are tons of AT&T U-Verse users with problems related to setting up their outgoing mail accounts.
According to the AT&T Help Page, the settings are located here, more specifically here:
1) Outgoing SMTP: outbound.att.net (requires authentication)
2) Incoming/Outgoing User Name: Full AT&T email address, including domain (e.g., test@att.net, test@bellsouth.net)
3) Outgoing mail port #: 465, secure connection (SSL) checked
What they fail to tell you is that you will not be able to use Mac Mail or pretty much any desktop-based web-mail client unless you call in and pay for the premium support to either open up port 25 or another port to make it work. Their default answer is that they do not support 3rd party email clients. I live in the Los Angeles market so it's a highly popular U-Verse market.
My question is has anyone been able to make it work without paid customer support? Seems like they stripped this ability then proceeded to charge customer minimum of $59.99 up to accounts of $150+ to just get this working which was working before. Their instruction pages shouldn't even be on there if it doesnt work - I did a scan of port 465 and it shows it as open from my side so something is going on over on AT&T's side that they simply stopped allowing. They should just take down this additional support page for Mac.
There are over 200 documented issues on the forums here on AT&T about these issues within the past year.
Even a quick google search finds over 8,000 other issues.

It is true that you cannot, without having the port unblocked, use a client to server connection on which the server listens on port 25. It is also apparently true that AT&T now charges to unblock that port.
However, if your SMTP server can work on another port, and you can configure MacMail to use that other port, then there is no reason to call AT&T and pay anything to use that other port. In fact, in the instructios that you provided, it tells you to switch to 465. Is there some reason you are unable to?
