Slow download speeds while HDTV boxes are on

Hello,

I've had my Uverse installed for exactly 1 week today.  I switched from a DSL 6Mbps line and DirecTV to Uverse data and TV.

I signed up initially for 18Mbps internet speed but never saw that.  I called AT&T and they sent a technician out to check the installation.  He said that I was on a 25Mbps profile and that my 2 HDTV boxes would eat roughly 10Mbps of that.  So the conclusion was that best case I'd get 15Mbps.  He suggested downgrading to the 12Mbps plan since I would not be paying extra for bandwidth I was not getting.  I called after he left and that's where I'm at now.

The problem arises when the HDTV boxes are running.  If I am recording 2 HD shows my internet speed drops to 1Mbps.  If only 1 HD show then I'm at around 6Mbps.  With 0 shows I can get my full speed.

Here are my Uv Realtime screenshots if it will be helpful.  I have a visit scheduled for a technician this afternoon.

Are you achieving the same internet speeds with both wired and wireless connections?

Yes, I primarily check from my computer that is connected with an ethernet cable but I've also tried from a tablet PC on the wifi.  The results are the same.

An HD stream uses approximately 5.7 mbps.  When only 2 HD streams (recording and/or live) are in use, you should still have full bandwidth available for you Max internet service.  You would see a reduction when 3 HD streams are in use, but you should still have approximately 8 mbps available for internet usage.

That's what I was lead to belive by the 1st tech's visit.  If I try a 3rd HD stream none of them are watchable.  The screen pauses and pixelates and the sound leaves.  I'd be OK with the reduction to 8Mbps if the shows were watchable but that would be a step up from my current situation.

My Device: works just fine, thank you.

From what I can see, your upload bandwidth is too low. For any traffic to come in there must be some traffic out (error correction, traffic control). For 25Mb downstream you should have atleast 2Mb upstream. Yours is showing ~1.4Mb upstream, aproximately 30% lower than it should be thus your downstream will be reduced aproximately 30%.

I also see your on a pairbonded connection because of your distance from the VRAD. Could you post another IP profile shot with the aggregate results?

I can post another IP profile screenshot but it will be this afternoon.  Perhaps around the same time the technician is here (scheduled between 1600-2000 today).

It is normal for iNID installations to use a 25/1.5 profile. This will typically not impact download speeds, although there are exceptions. Only a technician will be able to see if this is a problem.

Re: Slow download speeds while HDTV boxes are on

Ah, I was trying to think back to the last profile I saw with above 50 down and for some reason I remembered it had 4 or 5 up. Is the 1.5 a limitation of pair bonding?

Yes, because most iNID installations cannot use the upload 1 band from 3.8 - 5.2 MHz.  They normally use the upload 0 band, from 64 - 150 kHz.

The upload 0 band is fairly restricted, so the upload profile limit is shaved to 1.5 Mbps.

Re: Slow download speeds while HDTV boxes are on

Well the tech just left a few minutes ago and thinks I'm at the edge of service range for this much bandwidth.  He put in a request to change my port (at the VRAD?) which he thinks may happen as early as tomorrow.  I'll be at the hospital for a few days so I won't know the results of that until early next week at the soonest.

Here are the profile states with Aggregate selected.

Re: Slow download speeds while HDTV boxes are on

Well the technician that was going to switch the ports did so on Thursday.  I was unable to check it until today and that seems to have fixed it for me.  I can stream 2 HD shows and still get 11+ Mbps on a speedtest.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Could you post another IP Profile shot with the improved connection?

I don't think it looks significantly different but here it is.

Is that per pair, or is that a combined total?
