3801HGV - Xbox Live Disconnects Continually

First off just wanted to say that I've already done a ton of my own troubleshooting, searching and research to try to solve this on my own. I'm an IT consultant by trade, so I'm not new to this sort of thing. But I obviously don't know enough about U-Verse equipment to get around this issue. Hopefully you guys can help!

The story is that I recently switched from ATT DSL, which I've had for years, to U-Verse Internet + Voice. Internet works beautifully all around, and I really have had zero issues except for this one XBL problem. Even PSN works perfectly fine. With U-Verse equipment, my Xbox 360 S refuses to stay connected to XBL for more than a couple of minutes at a time. It does initially connect, but then quickly disconnects no matter what configuration I use. This unit is in a completely different room from my router, so I'm using it wirelessly. However, my previous 2WIRE modem had zero issues staying connected. So I even decided to buy an ASUS RT-N56U router to circumvent the 3801's wireless capabilities, but alas I have the exact same issue. Again, it does connect, but then disconnects right away.

Here is what I've done:

1. I'm using a router behind router configuration with the ASUS unit. Internet with every other device works flawlessly.

2. The 3801 has the main line to my ASUS in DMZPlus Mode, so it's pushing it straight to the ASUS router.

3. I have a static IP on my Xbox.

4. The ASUS router has all the required XBL ports opened for that IP

5. It also has that IP in the DMZ

6. Turned off all QOS on the ASUS

I'm not sure exactly what else I could try here. I initially thought it could be a QOS issue on the 3801, as I read somewhere that that could be the case. However, I only have Internet + Voice. I do not have TV. And it's not like I can alter QOS on the 3801 anyway, so I'm not sure if that's even worth looking in to. I also thought of it being a NAT issue, but NAT is enabled on the ASUS and I just don't think this is the case since PSN and all other devices connect perfectly.

I'm really disappointed here, because I love the speed and overall quality, but this one issue is a complete deal breaker if I can't get it to work.

Any ideas all? Thanks in advance!

Re: 3801HGV - Xbox Live Disconnects Continually
Try two things:

1. Connect the XB360 directly to the 2Wire.
2. Give the XB360 a static IP instead of using DHCP.

See if this makes any difference. If so, the XB360 has a DHCP problem or the ASUS router has some type of issue.

Hi Joe... as I mentioned the XBOX is using a static IP, so DHCP is not relevant for my issue. The only reason I haven't tried wired is:

1. Haven't been able to find my 100' CAT5 cable

2. It worked perfectly the day before switching from DSL to U-Verse, and I used wireless then as well. Don't think this is an issue with my XBOX wireless, because it stays connected the entire time to my network. I have no issues streaming movies from my computer to the XBOX, I just can't use XBL after a couple of minutes.

The ASUS router is one of the best routers on the market, and it's doing the exact same thing as the 3801. I really don't think it has anything to do with that. It honestly seems like a service-related issue in which XBL service is being interferred with somehow by ATT. There is another thread in this forum that is so similar to mine, and the resolution was the guy cancelling service. This seems to be a fairly documented problem with no real fix. There has got to be something wrong with the 3801. Literally the day I switched from DSL, this started occuring. The only difference is the new 3801 router, as the 2701 HG-B worked perfectly with XBL.

Any other ideas? In the mean time, I'll look for my long cable to try wired connection.

Thanks

Re: 3801HGV - Xbox Live Disconnects Continually
I don't have an XBox nor do I use XBL, so I unfortunately cannot say whether this is an AT&T problem, a modem/gateway problem, or something else.

I would try the connection wired and see if there's any improvement. If not, we can put you in touch with Alex here on the forum and he might be able to get one of the level 2 techs to work on this for you.

archangel, have you tried resetting the xbox's network settings to default and then re-entering your wireless info?

Re: 3801HGV - Xbox Live Disconnects Continually

Hi all,

Just wanted to give an update.

I finally found my 100' CAT5 cable, so I hooked it up to my Xbox AND reset network settings back to factory settings just in case. What I found was interesting. The first time XBL connected, it stayed connected a bit longer, but eventually disconnected after 10 minutes. So I rebooted and tried again, and this time I got a prompt for an XBL update, of which I was able to successfully download. After this, XBL never disconnected. So I figured that it was either the wired connection working better OR an Xbox update that fixed it OR a combo of both.

So I decided to then switch back to wireless, and it actually stayed connected for about 4 hours straight with no issues. I turned it back on tonight, and it started disconnecting again within 5 minutes just like before. So it seems completely random at this point.

One interesting part here is that I decided to go without any ports forwarded to the new IP on Xbox as well as not enabling DMZ for this IP. For some reason with no specific router settings for XBL, it was able to initially stay connected for 4 hours. I'm going to switch the port forwarding settings to the new IP now to see if that makes a difference.

Making a bit of progress but still not 100%. Thanks for all your help!

Re: 3801HGV - Xbox Live Disconnects Continually
Thanks for the update and keep us posted. I'm getting random disconnects that happen after an hour or so of play in MW3 Special Ops when playing with a friend I've gamed with for over 3 years.

I get an error that says something like "lost connection to player for more than 3 seconds" or something like that. I use a wired connection with my 3801HGV. He said he gets the same error as I do and then it sends me back to the spec ops lobby.

Re: 3801HGV - Xbox Live Disconnects Continually

Well I added back the specific XBL port settings and even went back to putting the new IP in the DMZ, and I really have no change. It's a completely random disconnect issue that seems to be because of U-Verse itself for some reason. I can actually connect, so I know it's not a port problem. And I know it's not my ASUS router, because I only bought this router, because I was experiencing the same thing with just the 3801.

Any other ideas or am I screwed here? I would love to speak to a level 2 tech directly if that's possible, but not sure how to go about doing it.

Thanks!

Re: 3801HGV - Xbox Live Disconnects Continually

All,

Still no dice for getting XBL to connect properly. I've tried everything, and I've ruled out my Xbox being a problem. It's also not my router for the issues stated previously.

Can I get fast-tracked to Tier 2, so I don't have to continually waste time?

There's a similar post on this forum of a user who had a Tier 2 tech fix the same issue over the phone. No clue what the issue actually was, but I have a feeling that it's similar to mine. This does not appear to be an issue with any hardware that I have. XBL is the only service not working right, and yet, it was working perfectly fine the day before getting U-Verse.

Help!

Thanks

Re: 3801HGV - Xbox Live Disconnects Continually

did you ever get an answer?  I have had Uverse for 3 weeks now and am concerned.  Xbox live disconnects every time the home phone rings.  We have phone, tv, and internet.  Xbox tells me it is an icmp error.

I have monitored my connection while calling the home number and can't see anything.  It only affects xbox live.  Searching the internet, apparently this is a common problem without a good solution other than dumping Uverse.

Re: 3801HGV - Xbox Live Disconnects Continually

Unfortunately I haven't. XBL still disconnects immediately, and it's the only online service that has trouble with UVerse. It's really a shame, as this is a noticeable flaw in either the equipment or service itself. I haven't had any trouble with anything else, except for XBL. So until ATT addresses this, it will continue to be a problem.

Did you call ATT to see if they could fix it on their end? Some others have had luck there

Re: 3801HGV - Xbox Live Disconnects Continually

I've got the older 3800HGVB & wind up getting multiple marketplace errors & connection problems in general to XBOX Live.  These have mostly started in the past few months.

Downloads from the service are also super slow as well.  I'm on the max speed plan & 100MB downloads take 30-45 minutes through live & 2-3 minutes on the PC.

I'm using the UV Realtime app to monitor things right now & see if there are errors in the line or problems in other ways.

I have a hardware firewall behing the gateway, setup with DMZ mode, & the hardware firewall has the xbox specific mode turned on.  It can work fine for a while, but then errors out again.

I have to wonder if the service just doesn't play nicely with XBL for whatever reason.

Re: 3801HGV - Xbox Live Disconnects Continually

I agree with your statement that the service doesn't jive well with XBL. It's obvious there are plenty of people who CAN use it, but this is a real problem. I was using ATT DSL for years with no problems. The day I switched to U-verse, I can't use XBL at all. It's either the service or the equipment, but it doesn't like XBL.

Re: 3801HGV - Xbox Live Disconnects Continually

After doing more tinkering & testing things at different times, I'm figuring the equipment where I live is over-subscribed.  I live in an apartment complex that was converted to a "U-Verse Community" & had all the other options for TV & internet effectively kicked out.

If I'm trying to do things in the morning or in the evening, it's much slower & tends to get more errors.  Middle of the night, unbelievably early in the morning, or other times when people aren't usually home & things are much better.

227,000 corrected blocks & 91 uncorrected blocks 7 days after rebooting the gateway.  About 14GB of traffic across the VDSL line over that time.  And I only have telephone & internet right now, since I discontinued the TV service.
