Attach wireless router to 2wire modem/GATE

I am trying to connect my wireless router (Cisco E3000) to my AT&T Uverse modem and gateway (2Wire 3800HGV-B). I need extended range and would prefer improved wifi speed.
I am able to get the router to work as a bridge by plugging in the ethernet cable into the numbered ports as opposed to the internet port. When I do this, it does not work very well. If I connect to the wireless router with wifi with my windows 7 laptop it shows me that I am connected to the 2Wire network, but it says it cannot find internet connection. However, sometimes when I connect to the router with an ethernet cable I get internet connection.
I am not sure how to get this to work, or if there is another solution to extend the wifi reach and connectivity speed of the 2wire modem.
I will be very grateful for any instructions on how to get this configured correctly!
