I was using Mobil 89 octane up until about a week ago. When the price went up to 3.19 I decided to use the 87 octane which was 3.03. The car performed exactly the same way so I am going with the lower priced gas. I keep picturing the pumps pushing 3 different octanes going into the same tank.![]()

Check your fuel mileage, RC. If the 89 octane contained ethanol and if the 87 octane does NOT....you might see an improvement in your mileage. Ya never know.

Actually the mileage is the same, and the performance of the engine has not decreased. When I use Marathon 89 octane the engine was really sluggish. Which is what made me go back to paying for the higher priced Mobil. Now the 87 octane at this particular station works as good as the 89.

Back up again. Was 2.89 at some spots yesterday but they have all went up to 3.15 by this morning.

Most stations here are posting 3.05 for regular gas, but I saw a couple posting 2.99 if you pay cash. Anybody like Citgo gasoline?

I filled up locally today in order to be ready for the snow storm or any emergencies and paid $2.919 per gallon for 87 octane regular unleaded.

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that Citgo is owned by the Venezuelan government....or, at least, by business interests from that country.....and gets its petroleum from that country also.(& probably elsewhere as well) As you know...that dictator just loves the USA and we him.![]()

Here in Missouri, state law requires gas stations to stock at least one grade of fuel with 10% ethanol content. Only if the station has the capacity to handle more than one grade can it offer ethanol free fuel. Here in our little town one station carries just one grade of gas and the other set of pumps are diesel. So all its gas contains ethanol. But another station a couple of miles away...same company....carries two grades of gas. 89 and 87 octane. The 87 grade does not contain ethanol. I always try to purchase that. But occasionally I find myself trapped into filling with the fuel with the ethanol. My mileage drops by approximately 5%. This decrease results from the lower B.T.U. rating of the ethanol/gas mixture. When I lived in Iowa and worked for the state economic development agency I was involved in the original push for gasohol....defined as 90% gas blended with 10% ethanol. The scientists at Iowa State University revealed the futility of this promotion in study after study. But, as is often the case in the U.S., the facts took the back seat. Ergo.....crazy regulations like we have here and in many other states.
At one time...Western U.S. interests were promoting a different version which used methanol (wood alcohol). But that turned into a disaster and, indeed, nearly sunk the gasohol movement. Methanol is a stronger solvent than ethanol (the stuff we drink in our booz) and engines and fuel systems were suffering destroyed seals and gaskets, etc. This does not happen with ethanol. But most people don't understand the difference......and to them alcohol is alcohol.
As owner of a small farm in Iowa, I can fully appreciate the desire to maintain a strong market for feed corn. But I have to admit that the benefits are really not there as far as using it for a fuel.
Just recently construction of a new alcohol plant was announced. It will differ from present technology in that it will use only the corn plant stocks and cobs......not the grain kernels....which are removed and still available for livestock feed, corn syrup, vitamin and other nutrient products. This improved technology may remove some of the objections currently being fielded against the use of corn for motor fuel.

With further unrest in the Middle East, prices are rising. I paid $2.92 in a hurry for an appointment; figured I'd come back that afternoon and pay $2.87 across the street. But by dusk, that same station was up to $3.09!

Oil has topped the $100/bbl mark so prices are going to continue to rise.

Last nite saw the BP station by work was up to $3.25 from $3.11 the day before. It's a bummer that prices are still going up, but still get my 5% back on my Chase BP Visa. Also noticed my Fedelity Select Energy Fund went up 1.24% ($263.63) on a bad down day yesterday, making it up big time on this end. ![]()

These prices make those hybrid vehicles look really appealing. Prices jumped 20 cents per gallon at some stations here in Detroit today. The one thing that really isn't fair is that the oil companies report all of these profits even though the cause is supposed to be related to the problems in other parts of the world.

But vehicles like those will make gas prices rise, since better mileage means less tax money.

Yes they will. War will cause prices to go up, natural disasters will cause prices to go up, governments will cause the prices to go up, greed will cause the prices to go up.
No one thing will stop or cause gas prices to increase. At this moment I like the idea of hybrids, and wouldn't mind having one. Right now I drive a conventional automobile so I will not b responsible for a gas tax increase.

Spotted $3.32 today, and drove through a protest in the Galleria (was peaceful, not quite about oil, but what's going on over there).
Hopefully prices out my way are not that high!

Some are as low as 3.09 and as high as 3.49. I paid 3.29 for midgrade yesterday. And the day before it was 3.29,

Our prices went from $3.10 to $3.17 to current $3.30 in 3 days. Libya is still pumping oil this is just maybe pricing.
Heard why the Libyan oil which is only 2% was so important. It is so called sweet oil meaning low sulfur and makes a lot of diesel from each barrel. The Saudi oil is sour and may take several barrels to get same amount of low sulfur diesel after using special equipment to remove the extra sulfur.

In Cali way over $4 per gallon. I hope that doesn't work it's way across the country.

It is being reported a group supported by Iran blew Iraq's biggest refinery. Iran is helping create some of the havoc to boost oil prices and their income to offset the pain the sanctions on them are causing.
