Well we're sitting on $2.779 per gallon for regular unleaded here in our little town. For the life of me I cannot understand the pricing structure of gasoline. Why not just charge $2.78 and be done with it.
The higher octane "super" unleaded is the same price around here because the octane is boosted by use of 10% grain alcohol mixed with 90% gasoline....also known as Gasohol. The alcohol tax break makes that possible. But then the car owner takes a 5% hit on his fuel mileage so it still ends up costing him more. Unfortunately we have laws in many states.....Missouri and Kansas included.....which REQUIRE gas stations to stock and sell the Gasohol from at least one pump. Only those stations which carry two or more grades of fuel can offer alcohol free gasoline. At least that is what the station managers tell me.
