Need router in another room
I have my main DVR in my living room with 3 additional STBS throughout the house.  I need to add a 4th STB to another room and need the ability to run an ethernet cable to my PC and/or XBOX.  What options are available for this?  I don't want to have the main DVR sitting in my office.

Where is your Residential Gateway located? (RG)

I have my RG next to my dvr upstairs and 3 other stb throughout the house. All of my computers/laptops run wireless, My xbox is also next to my RG and it is wired directly into the RG.

This setup works pretty well for me, but I understand that a lot of people like to have their computers wired.

Dumb question....is the RG the 2Wire modem?  Does that have to be near the DVR or can it be next to the STB in my office?

Yes, the Residential Gateway is the 2-wire modem and you can put it anywhere you want to as long as it is connected to the NID (gray connection box) on the side of your house. Mine is at the opposite end of the house from the DVR. You just have to have a line run from each STB, and the DVR, to the RG.

Have you already checked with U-verse on ordering another STB? Typically it is $55 to get a truck to roll your way and there may be an additional installation charge for connecting the STB. (edit: disregard this since you now have max number of STB's (3) and are only permitted 1 DVR.)

Good luck. :smileyhappy:

edit: Believe you can only have 3 STB's and 1 DVR connected to the RG since the signal is typically 1HD/3SD or 2HD/2SD which means a total of 4 signals coming in. Only way to connect a 5th TV to this system would be to run another cable to the DVR, or a STB, and if that is the case you will be watching the same channel on both sets.

Uni, you can have up to 7 TVs (1 DVR, 6 STBs) w/Uverse.  If cat5e, they just use a switch w/more ports and coax, more splitters. :smileywink:

Edit:  Other TVs could be watching recorded programs at the same time.

Thanks for correcting me on this Chris! :smileywink:

Kind of got tunnel vision and should have left post as was instead of 2 edits.

Guess I was looking at just 4 streams and 4 receivers (DVR & 3 STB's). Remember offering advice on new install and suggested connecting coaxial to another STB instead of paying for another one. They didn't mind having same channel on both TV's.

As you said can be watching recorded programs on additional TV's/STB's. Will still only have 4 live broadcasts with max of 2 being HD if they have 2HD/2SD profile.
