STB HMDI + optical

My television does not accept "surround sound". But I would like to be able to not have to turn on my receiver every time my son wants to watch television. Seems like optical should always send PCM and you can select the HDMI portion.

I have HDMI from my DVR to Samsung flat screen.  I also have optical from the DVR to Onkyo receiver.   When watching tv, I leave the DVR set on stereo.  When using the receiver for movies and concerts, etc., I set the DVR on surround for 5.1 surround or leave it on stereo for one of the Onkyo built-in sounds including 7.1.
