Bad reception on VOIP

Am using Panasonic model #kx-tga410 on my u-verse voip. The reception is generally spotty, but becomes really bad when placed on speaker mode. People on other end say sound quality is terrible when on speaker mode. After a few minutes, a feedback echo occurs, making it very unpleasant to carry on a conversation. Any thoughts or suggestions, including trashing the system??

If the telephone base unit is near the RG try moving it farther away and see if that helps. Also, if possible, see if you can borrow another phone to try, there is the possibility that something could be wrong with your Panasonic.
